The “best point guard of all time” debate has been going on for a while. Especially since the reign of Stephen Curry began in the NBA. Although there were PGs before who would’ve challenged Magic Johnson for the throne, Curry made the argument fairly obvious. About 2 months ago, a usually humble Steph broke the internet with his audacious claim.

That created a massive amount of buzz on the internet with the common generational divide coming into play. To people’s surprise, Johnson too had a few words to deliver on the topic. What surprised people is his alleged nemesis taking sides in the heated debate.

Stephen Curry’s claim against Magic Johnson

In the last decade, the Golden State Warriors superstar was arguably the best athlete in the NBA. He is often credited for changing the game with insane shooting accuracy. Curry’s ability to bank a three-pointer forced everyone in the league to pay attention to the usually overlooked skill. In today’s game, it makes for the most lethal ability that can win you games. On top of that, the 35-year-old clinched 4 NBA championships in a span of 7 years. Curry presents a pretty solid argument for being one of the all-time greats, but his “best point guard” ever comment is what rubbed people the wrong way.

The intensity of this debate was such that Johnson’s rival Norm Nixon had a word or two on the topic. Nixon, in his own opinion, was misrepresented in the Winning Time documentary as he believed there was not a rivalry and that Michael Cooper didn’t break them up. However, when asked about Curry’s claim of being the best ever, Nixon said “You have to always go eras”. The 68-year-old said that it is hard for him to put the tag on just one person because that would be unfair to the 70+-year-old legacy of the NBA.

However, Nixon didn’t hesitate in crowning Steph as just “a great guard”, including all the different positions a guard can hold.

Magic Johnson’s Response to Stephen Curry

When the LA Lakers legend was asked about Curry’s comment, he didn’t hold back. Magic said, “If he has more than five championships, if he’s got more than three Finals MVPs and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest.” As we all know, Curry’s otherwise stacked resume falls short of what Magic was able to accomplish. The Warriors superstar has four NBA championships, one Finals MVP which he won in 2022, and two league MVPs in 2015 and ’16.
