The rookie season in the NBA is a major transition phase for most new players. Going from college to the NBA is like night and day. The players you face and the plays the teams run are extremely different from the collegiate level. But for this 6-foot ball-handling demon, it was just like another day. He torched the league in his rookie season and still holds this rookie record even after 26 years.
After getting drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers into the league in 1996, this NBA legend went on to have one of the greatest rookie seasons ever by a player. On his path to doing so, he went ahead and broke a record that hadn’t been touched in 38 years.

Allen Iverson recently posted this video of him breaking the rookie record for most consecutive games with 40 points or more. Iverson shared five clips, and each of them was a highlight reel of himself from every one of those matches.
He captioned the video, “5 40+ games in a row, NBA Rookie record. All in a week span?Sh**ting in pampers!! #97ROY #THROWBACKTHURSDAY.” In this one week, Iverson averaged 43.6 points, 7.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals.
He scored 40 points or more in five matches in a row and set a new rookie record. The previous record was set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1959. Wilt’s streak was three games. The record stood still for 38 years until it was Iverson’s turn to have a go at it in 1997.

Iverson broke the record in a span of seven days. He dropped 40 or more in five consecutive matches against the Bulls, Hawks, Bucks, Cavs and the Bullets. Iverson also dropped 50 when he went up against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Even one of the league’s best defenders, Scottie Pippen, couldn’t stop this scoring outburst from Iverson. Even though the Sixers didn’t win any games during Iverson’s scoring spree, he still gave it his all during his rookie season.

Allen Iverson’s legendary rookie year
Apart from breaking this rookie record, Iverson was really one of a kind in his rookie season. In his debut game, he scored 30 points. He was an actual scoring machine. His crossovers couldn’t be contained. Iverson finished the year averaging 23.5 PTS, 7.5 AST, 4.1 REB, and 2.1 STL. He ended up winning Rookie of the Year over players like Kobe Bryant and Ray Allen.
The Philadelphia 76ers, as a team, could only muster up 20 wins throughout the year. The team as a whole was mediocre and at the bottom of the standings. That’s why they got the number one overall pick in the previous year. Iverson went on to have an incredible career, and his impact on the people and the culture was never left unnoticed.
