Not long ago, Shaquille O’Neal had elevated a new star to the greatest player in the history of Louisiana State’s athletics. He’s hoping for a spectacular repeat of the women’s basketball glory this season too. But the latest game did not go the way Shaq would’ve wished. Angel Reese’s squad was up against the Colorado Buffaloes in the season opener. And both Shaq and his son had a front-row view of the LSU Tigers’ blowout loss.
Shareef O’Neal is in the fam’s favorite city in the world aka Las Vegas with his dad. And the father-son duo did not miss a single moment of this showdown even when it went downhill.

The LSU Tigers women’s basketball team opened their season against the Colorado Buffaloes today at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A lot of expectations were riding on the Tigers led by Angel Reese. Especially after Shaquille O’Neal hyped her throughout the year. Not ones to skip out on the action, Shaq and his son Shareef were at the game.
The official LSU page provided an update of Shaq and Shareef seated courtside, rightfully stating, “Icons support icons.” Shareef was also cheering for his dad’s alma mater.
Sadly, things didn’t go as the O’Neals would’ve wished for. When Shareef gave a courtside update on his Instagram Stories, the Tigers were down 75-90 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. They couldn’t close the gap and lost 78-92 to the Buffs. The O’Neal guys didn’t comment on the loss immediately but Shareef would share a picture of him and his dad on Instagram with the tell-all caption, “TWIN.”

Louisiana State has a special spot in the O’Neal household. It’s where Shaq was the outstanding NBA prospect in the Tigers jersey and where he’d return to complete his bachelor’s degree. Shareef O’Neal transferred here from UCLA before heading to the NBA G-League based in Las Vegas. His sister, Amirah, initially studied at LSU and was on the basketball team roster.

Shaquille O’Neal pinned his hopes on LSU
His own affiliation with LSU is not the only reason Shaq is rooting for the school. He’s been cheering for Angel Reese as she led the team to its first-ever NCAA championship last season. The 4x NBA champion was so awed; he stated she was the LSU GOAT over himself and any other famous alum.
He hinted at this very GOAT when teasing his first signing as the new president of Reebok’s basketball division. Fans were blown away by the revelation of a NIL deal between Reese and Reebok, a truly spectacular partnership.
