Did Shareef O'Neal make the right call by stepping out of Shaq's shadow at LSU?

An accomplished DJ in his own regard, but could things have been different for Myles O’Neal? As most Shaquille O’Neal fans would know, his 27-year-old son might not have followed his father’s legacy in sports, but he surely has been proving his worth in a different field that his father earned a name for himself — DJing. However, it turns out it was not the lack of talent that drove Myles away from sports, but a personal setback.

The 27-year-old was recently in attendance at a football game featuring LSU Tigers. In an IG story shared by Brian Bayati, Myles revealed he almost made it to the football team of the Tigers back in the day. “I was supposed to go to LSU, but… I f*cked up my back, bro,” he said in the video. The young DJ even got his brother Shaqir O’Neal, present at the game, to back his claim.

“This ni**a was the number one football recruit in LA. (But) chose the DJ,” Shaqir said. As for the position, Myles played backup quarterback, he revealed. Had things fallen into place, he would’ve been the third from the O’Neal family to shine in an LSU jersey.

However, while Shaquille O’Neal had an impeccable career at the university, his eldest son Shareef was subpar at best. In his two seasons with the Tigers, Shareef averaged 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds. As for Shaq, he closed his college career with 21.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 4.6 blocks. During that time, he also earned himself the titles of 1991 NCAA rebounding leader and 1992 NCAA blocks leader.

But things turned out well for Myles without LSU as well, as after the aforementioned setback, the 27-year-old went to Santa Monica College. Subsequently, finding his way into the modeling industry, and his present love — DJing.

Shaq and Myles became the first father-son duo to DJ in the rave cave at Tomorrowland in July this year. But that was just the beginning. Myles followed up with a solo performance in Hvar, Croatia, showing he’s carving out his own space in the DJ scene.

Following this, the young DJ fulfilled a personal dream as well. He made his Lollapalooza debut on August 1, 2024, as announced by him in an IG post. “WE PLAYING @lollapalooza BABY!!!” he wrote.

However, whatever he has been achieving recently, in an interview with IEDM, Myles credited it all to the inspiration he derived from his father. It’s no secret how successful Shaq has been as a DJ. And this passion emerged from his age-old love for rap and hip-hop culture, further grasped by his son Myles. So even though the 27-year-old had to give up on his father’s LSU legacy, he is efficiently carrying his old man’s legacy as a DJ.
