Shaquille O’Neal‘s latest stint seemed to lack the expected fan support, but it is tears of affection that he is shedding. It’s no secret that Shaq’s side quests are awaited every year he takes a break from basketball-associated commitments. The most recent one of these has been a game show from the same creative that came up with Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
If your guess was ABC’s Lucky 13, you stand correct. The game show featured Shaquille O’Neal and Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez as co-hosts for the game show. Aired on July 18, the crew therein had a few behind-the-scenes footage to let on.
Of course, they wouldn’t miss on the 4x NBA champ’s usual shenanigans, but a few emotional moments also made their way to the clips. One of these was Rodriguez gifting a t-shirt to Shaq with her son’s photo imprinted on it. Meanwhile, yet another one included the 4x NBA champ shedding tears as the shoot came to an end. “As you can see, I’m crying. This was a nice two weeks. Everybody at Lucky 13, I love you,” Shaq said in the BTS video.

The former LA Lakers star seemed to have really enjoyed the concept and the experience. Gina previously revealed that Shaq had developed an adorable bond with her son. Whenever she needed a break, it the Lakers icon who took care of the little one. It included little hang outs in his room and head bobing to DJ Disel’s rap music. She expressed that Charlie fell “madly in love with him.” Now that explains the t-shirt she gifted.
As a whole too, Shaq revealed it to be a good experience on Good Morning America. “We had a lot of interesting characters [on the show]… The program turned out to be great, and I really learned a lot,” he said in the interview, ahead of the premiere. But the fans seem to lack a similar level of interest in the show.

The ABC’s official website summarizes the format of the show as — “Lucky 13 tests contestants’ knowledge with 13 true-or-false trivia questions but with a cunning twist: Just how well do they know what they know.” The contestants have to accurately predict 13 questions to take home the $1 million winning prize amount. While some fans seemed to have digged the concept, some, not so much.
A significant amount of criticism of the show comes from its format itself, which an X user termed “a bit slow” and “a bit boring.” Meanwhile, there also came some suggestions like doing 3 games an hour rather than two. Yet another one believes the format is better suited for daytime and a smaller money ladder. “It’s not a million dollar game,” he added. However, one criticism of the show has stemmed from a mistake that fans noticed in the premiere episode itself.
Notably, Chicago dentist Barrett Chesley, pitted against a Seattle teacher Krista Barbour, faced the true/false question — “Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day.” While Chesley correctly termed the statement as false, the show declared it to be true. While Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5, Mexican Independence comes on September 16. Since then, some users have been demanding to get Chesley back on the show. The shoot, for now, seems to be wrapped up. But it won’t be the first time that a show calls back a contestant on popular fan-demand.
