When thinking of entertaining personalities in the NBA, Shaq is often the first name that comes to mind. Known for his larger-than-life persona, the basketball legend famously calls himself Santa but doesn’t appreciate receiving gifts. In fact, all the gifts he’s received over the past 30 years are reportedly stacked in a single room. However, the same indifference doesn’t apply to taking credit. He even demanded an apology, calling out the famed comedian for the same.

The famed comedian and actor is none other than Godfrey; the same Godfrey famous for his popular podcast In Godfrey We Trust. From social issues to pop culture, it explores diverse topics. As he made an appearance at The Big Podcast, O’Neal demanded recognition for what he believed was a start to Godfrey’s podcast career. “Godfrey owes me an apology. Who got you started, Godfrey? Who got me started in what in the podcast world?” he asked.

When Godfrey appeared confused, Shaq reminded them they had previously collaborated on a decade-old show called Upload which had the podcast format. He implied that this influenced Godfrey’s later success after he met Bert Kreischer. “Me and you had a show that got canceled because of you. That was podcast like and then after that, you met with Bert when you started the show. You forgot our show that we had? Upload?” Shaq demanded. In response, Godfrey still appeared very baffled.

Well, it’s natural to forget the show that took place years ago. When host Adam Lefkoe asked why Upload didn’t take off, Shaq jokingly responded that it was because Godfrey wasn’t “funny enough.”

So, did Big Aristotle get the credit?

Shaquille O’Neal finally got the tribute

Much later in the podcast, Lefkoe asked Godfrey about someone who had always supported him. With Shaquille O’Neal persistently coughing to hint at himself, the comedian finally named the basketball star. He expressed appreciation for the Big Aristotle, calling him the greatest cheerleader.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Shaq really kickstart Godfrey's career, or is the Big Aristotle just seeking attention?

“Shaq put me on his show, man. Shaq said I told you I was gonna hook you up. I like okay. Shaq has always always backed me up even though you can’t find him half the time, but goddamn it, when you find him he’s always. I remember when he called me he said when are you going to do your next special? I want to be a part of it. See, a lot of people don’t do that,” Godfrey admitted.

He also joked about how O’Neal is usually unavailable, but the time he shows up, the Los Angeles Lakers legend goes above and beyond to offer his support.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see much of O’Neal and Godfrey together on Upload. The show, which premiered in 2013, featured comedians Gary Owen, Godfrey, Rachel Feinstein, and, of course, Shaq. While it wasn’t exactly a podcast, it followed a format similar to Shaqtin A Fool, with the cast reacting to a series of hilarious videos. The series aired for 10 episodes.

In 2014, the show was set to return for six more episodes, but poor ratings reportedly derailed those plans. Nevertheless, the show might have helped forge a deeper connection between him and Godfrey.
