Rivalries are back in the NBA. With the demand for intensity during games, the emergence of podcasts has been a surefire way of igniting players and teams. However, what happens when that competition turns into disrespect? Those are the unfortunate circumstances that have found their way around Bill Russell. Due to comments by Udonis Haslem, who later got some validation from Shaquille O’Neal as well, the conversation has turned disrespectful. But, for Shannon Sharpe, the merits of Russell’s honor are indestructible.
“Sometimes, a player is so good and so great, they transcend the sport. Because he’s more than just a basketball player.” Uncle even had a classic baseball reference to elaborate on his point. “It’s kinda like Jackie Robinson. They retired 42 league-wide because he transcended the sport.”

He would continue with his analogy by making a case for their off-the-court impact as well. “Was he the best player in baseball? No. But what he did should never be forgotten. Bill Russell was the same way. What he went through, even in Boston as he was winning all those titles…I think it was ’67 in which the summit in Cleveland happened. He was there. Bill Russell is a civil rights icon.” As a result, it would lead to Shannon bringing out the next comparison.
“Is Muhammed Ali the greatest boxer? No, but he transcends the sport. And sometimes, when a person is transcendental, whatever is bestowed upon him is worthy. Bill Russell having his number retired across the league is worthy.”

Due to his battles with the Boston Celtics for nearly 20 years, there is a deep-seated rivalry between Haslem and the team. As a result, the veteran who retired earlier this year had no qualms in expressing his displeasure with Russell.
Or more specifically, with seeing his beloved Miami Heat retire the #6 jersey. Even Shaq appeared to be in agreement with UD about Russell and Michael Jordan having their jerseys retired by the organization. But, for the Heat veteran, the greatest source of his animosity is a different group.
