Nearly two decades after Scottie Pippen stepped away from the NBA court, he’s back—but this time, he’s aiming to make his mark in a different arena: the box office. The 6x NBA champ recently announced he is working on a documentary focused on the iconic “Game 5 Ball” from the 1991 NBA Finals. It’s a piece of history, but Pippen’s story just gained an even more impressive twist. His Game 5 Ball recently set a new record, toppling MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani’s previous milestone.

Pippen broke the news on Instagram, where he revealed the “@Game5Ball just broke the record, surpassing Shohei Ohtani’s 50/50 ball as the most valuable $BALL ever! 🏀” Adding to the hype, he wrote, “This project will innovate sports. Vision and focus made this the top collectible, and we’re just getting started. Shouts to the community!” However, Pippen kept fans in suspense, omitting any exact dollar figures on this new value.

Just weeks before Pippen’s announcement, Ohtani stunned fans by becoming the first player ever to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single MLB season—a feat he achieved with a massive 20-4 win over the Miami Marlins. The ball that marked this historic moment was auctioned off, fetching an astounding $4.4 million, making it one of the highest-priced baseballs ever sold.

The auction house Goldin, which handled the sale, confirmed that the $4,392,000 bid made Ohtani’s ball the priciest baseball—or any sports ball—ever to hit the auction block. But, with Pippen now laying claim to an even greater figure, the Game 5 Ball seems to have set an entirely new benchmark.

Teaming up with Hidden Empire Films, Scottie Pippen is gearing up to tell the untold stories of the Chicago Bulls’ iconic 1990-1991 season. But what exactly will this new documentary series spotlight? For Pippen, the vision is clear: “I think it’s going to be more about the whole run of that season. My ideal is to see this ball really sort of tell a story of what it was like for basketball in the ‘90s and what it was like for our journey to get to that first championship.” With production underway, fans can expect this fresh take on the Bulls’ dynasty to hit in 2025.

Not just any piece of memorabilia, the “Game 5 Ball” carries deep meaning for Pippen. “We’re looking to do a documentary on this basketball because we think that there’s a lot of stories to be told,” he shared with TMZ Sports. Pippen sees this ball as more than just a symbol of the Bulls’ rise—it also marked the close of the Lakers’ “Showtime” era. “I think that ball really was a start of a dynasty and almost, I want to say, the end of a great dynasty in the Los Angeles Lakers,” he explained.

The ’91 Finals were indeed a true clash of titans, with the Bulls, led by Michael Jordan and Pippen, taking on Magic Johnson’s Lakers. This wasn’t just a win for Chicago—it was the beginning of a historic six-championship run.

Director Deon Taylor shares Pippen’s enthusiasm, calling the “Game 5 Ball” the “holy grail” of sports, a powerful marker of triumph and cultural impact, and “the moment that redefined the game forever.”
