Michael Jordan has been part of the Charlotte Hornets since 2006. Back then, Bob Johnson was the majority owner of the team. But despite that, Michael Jordan had the final say in basketball decisions for the team. In 2009, the Hornets went on a losing streak for a whole week. This made Jordan extremely unhappy.

As the Hornets were about to play their first game without Michael Jordan in over a decade, The Athletic interviewed former players of the Hornets to get a better understanding of how Jordan was as a member of the team. A former player shared an experience from his rookie year that made him see the dark side of playing for Michael Jordan.

Gerald Henderson Jr. was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 2009. He was the 12th pick in the first round. One day as a rookie, Henderson was going into the practice facility, and he noticed that Jordan was in there and was already stretching. He asked Jordan what he was up to. To this, Jordan replied, “I?m gonna come up there and kick y?all ass“.

Stephen Jackson was the best player on the team at the time. He was almost in consideration for making it in as an all-star. He was making a name for himself in the media as well. As the team was losing back-to-back, Michael Jordan decided to play against the starting five of the Hornets. Jordan joined the second team along with Henderson.

Henderson said, “He looked like prime Michael Jordan, without the quickness and the jumping ability. But it was just all MJ work. Talking smack the whole time“. Toward the end of the game, Stephen Jackson went up for a shot, but no foul was called. This made Jackson complain to the team about the no-call.

Jordan, on the other hand, took the ball and went and scored the game-winner while Jackson was still complaining to the coaches. Hearing this, Jordan said, “The MFer ain?t never been an All-Star but wants all the All-Star calls.

Henderson was surprised to hear the owner of the team call out one of its players like this, and he said, “Oh, s**t. Damn, that was a little harsh“.

No teammate is safe around Jordan

Stephen Jackson is lucky that he was let off the hook with just some verbal abuse. It was not always that pleasant for his teammates back in the day. Michael Jordan has trouble keeping his hands to himself. This is why he has a reputation for punching his teammates.

This was common during the Bulls’ practice back in the day. Jordan once punched his center for repeatedly doing an illegal screen on him. But one of the most famous ones that everyone knows of is his infamous fight with Steve Kerr. Kerr and Jordan went up against each other in a scrimmage in practice. As tensions rose with repeated fouls, Kerr and Jordan got into a fistfight, and Jordan was thrown out of the practice.
