Rudy Gobert vs. Gilbert Arenas—who's the real king of NBA banter?

It’s been a rough patch for Rudy Gobert lately. First, the infamous altercation with Draymond Green, and then Shaquille O’Neal took a jab, labeling him the worst player in the NBA. To top it off, Gilbert Arenas has been taking his shots, too. So the former Warriors star Nick Young had some advice for Gobert to settle the score with his co-host Agent Zero. And in a hilarious coincidence, the French star seems to be acting upon it.

On a recent Gil’s Arena podcast, Nick Young had a few words for Gobert on how to earn back his respect after the clash with Green. According to Swaggy P: “He [Rudy Gobert] can walk through the door, [tell] I’m tired of you [Gilbert Arenas] talking that shit. Boom, Gil just then drop. And then go burn that name change.” Interestingly, just days later, Gobert practicing boxing went viral on social media. And now Young is here to double down on his idea with a hilarious tweet.

“Aye @rudygobert27 I see you boxing, now all you gotta next, is roll up to Gil’s Arena, drop him while he talking sports and u good lol dm me for address 😂😂😂 I’ll leave the gate open or ‘we’ can wait to ‘we’ play the Warriors I can help you sneak in the locker room and we can get Draymond lol,” Young tweeted.

Amid all this chaos, big Shaq also threw his hat on the incident. In a recent interview with Complex alongside his son Myles, Shaq took his own jab, calling Rudy Gobert the “Worst NBA Player.” And just last month, Green, whose head-locking incident involving Gobert earned him a 5-game suspension, called out the Wolves star for being benched during the Olympics.

But despite the taunts, Gobert is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and played a key role in Minnesota’s journey to the Western Conference Finals last season. Though sometimes in disagreements about it, Arenas seems to still respect Gobert as a player.

Gobert Gains support from Agent Zero

Gilbert Arenas has often been critical of Rudy Gobert in the past. “Give your trophies back,” he had said when the Frenchman was in a slump during the playoffs this past season. He doubled down on that last month when Gobert was sidelined for a defensive line-up in a game against Canada at the Olympics.

“He is a liability… He’s considered the best defensive player but when you need him to be defensively, he is being pulled off the floor. It’s a contradiction to his awards,” Arenas remarked on his podcast. But after the recurring remarks, more recently after Shaq’s, Agent Zero came to the Wolves’ star’s defense.

“He is getting a bunch of hate that really, he ain’t deserve and he just in the right place at the right time. That’s all it is.” Nick Young, interestingly, took a different angle, pointing out that Gobert’s reputation for doing “goofy sh*t” often leaves him wide open for trolling. Regardless, Gobert is currently focused on some off-season training. He took on the former UFC interim Heavyweight champion and fellow Frenchman Ciryl Gane a few hours ago for one and will be making his presence at the Wolves training camp on October 1st.
