Shaquille O’Neal is often remembered for his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers. But his early days with the Orlando Magic were also legendary. Although he only spent 4 years with the team, it was recently announced that Shaquille O’Neal’s No. 32 jersey will be the first-ever jersey retired by the Magic.
But a former Houston Rockets star who played against Shaquille O’Neal and the Orlando Magic brought down Shaq’s legacy by reminding his dominant win against the big man.
“Well, at least he (Dwight Howard) won a finals game in Orlando jersey and Shaq didn’t. That’s my dig at Shaq cause we swept him,” said Robert Horry in a recent episode of Big Shot Bob while talking about the next athletes that have a chance at joining Shaquille O’Neal in the rafters.

The Orlando Magic recently announced that Shaq’s jersey would be retired on February 13th. Shaq led the team to the finals in 1995, where they eventually got swept by the Houston Rockets. After his rookie contract expired, he left the team. But even then, the Magic are giving this honor to Shaq over Dwight Howard, who played significantly longer in Orlando.
Howard played for the Magic for 8 seasons and outdid Shaq by winning 1 game in the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. As Horry was a member of the Rockets that eliminated Shaq, he took a shot at the 4x champion. But this has now brought another question to the forefront. Should Dwight Howard have gotten his jersey retired before Shaq in Orlando?

Dwight Howard had a better career in Orlando than Shaquille O’Neal
Although Shaq is getting his jersey retired first, Dwight Howard also has a strong case for making it. While Shaq was a much more offensive player, Howard dominated the NBA with his defensive prowess.
Shaq won a scoring title in Orlando, while Dwight Howard won 3 DPOY awards in his time with the Magic. Both led their teams to the finals once and lost.
