Patrick Beverley calling JJ Redick the best for LeBron—agree or just another hot take?

Patrick Beverley doesn’t let personal conflicts cloud his judgment. Despite his ongoing feud with former NBA player JJ Redick, Beverley has remained honest in his critiques. Just before the 2024 NBA draft, Redick was named the head coach of the Lakers. Now, this decision has been met with skepticism due to his lack of coaching experience. However, Beverley has stood firm in defending the Lakers and LeBron James’ choice to bring the Duke legend onto the coaching staff.

The Lakers were in need of fresh perspectives, something Redick undoubtedly offers. Beverley believes that the 2x Rupp Trophy winner’s deep basketball knowledge makes him an ideal fit for James’ team. Furthermore, Beverley highlighted Redick’s confidence, assertiveness, and fearless approach to sharing his honest opinions. This quality will help him manage high-profile players while pushing them to improve.

“Well watch, I mean, I bet that he’ll be the type of dude to be like, you’ve seen the way that he carries himself since he was at Duke, that he’s not afraid to give somebody a hard opinion, that he knows what the fuck he’s talking about,” Beverley said.

He also argued about why Redick was put at the end of the list of candidates for the coach position when he was certainly the best candidate. “And they put JJ Reddick the last on the list, who type, I don’t know who put him on there,” he argued. Previously, he also congratulated Redick for acquiring the position.

Beverley specifically mentioned Rui Hachimura, expressing optimism that Redick could help boost Hachimura’s “confidence.” In the end, Beverley agreed that Redick has what it takes to succeed as a coach. “And he’s a respectable a**hole. Like, he’s just that, JJ Reddick,” the ex-NBA player said.

While the 3x NBA All-Defensive Team honoree might not be bringing his personal issues with the Lakers freshly minted coach, not everything is cool between the two basketball stars.

Have an interesting take?

In the same podcast, Beverley previously argued that during the 2015 Western Conference semifinal matchup, Redick was bested by James Harden. He also claimed that head coach Doc Rivers should have started Jamal Crawford instead of Redick.

The Duke legend clearly wasn’t pleased with Beverley’s claims. Soon, he pulled out old stats and went on X to call out Beverley, suggesting he must have missed something.

The fire was initially ignited when Redick criticized Coach Doc Rivers on ESPN, stating that Rivers often made “excuses” and lacked “accountability.” Beverley responded on X, calling out Redick for criticizing Rivers, saying the coach was the first person to show faith in him and let him start. The exchange escalated, with Redick arguing that he had the same contract and role as a starter. And, there was no end to the argument on social media.

It sure is surprising that Beverley put aside his personal beef to uplift the Los Angeles Lakers’ new head coach.
