The NBA coaches and players share a special relationship. Most athletes who join the league at 18-19 are not experienced enough for every decision, and that is where the role of a good coach kicks in. Although the last few months have been rough, Doc Rivers’ name is among those coaches who have transformed several lives.

Recently, one of his ex-players gave him his flowers. While admitting to being on the verge of making a mistake, the 36-year-old said that if it weren’t for Rivers, his career would’ve had a downfall.

Lou Williams was in the league from 2005-2022. During that time he represented several franchises, however, his stint with the LA Clippers was the most successful. This is where Williams received the tutelage of Rivers for which he is still grateful. The 36-year-old had a very decorated career, before entering the NBA. In 2005 alone, Williams was Naismith Prep Player of The Year, made it into McDonald’s All American, Nike Hoop Summit, and was awarded Mr. Georgia Basketball. However, the same success couldn’t transpire in the league, and accolades alone couldn’t evolve his caliber as an athlete.

Recently, the ex-star was in conversation with a current star, Trae Young. On the podcast, Williams was asked about his learnings from the coaches he has played under. Williams started off with Rivers’ name. He said that the 62-year-old has helped him a lot in his career. Williams detailed the mistake he was about to commit and was stopped by his coach in time. The coach had asked him, “What’s the problem? You look like you don’t wanna be here”. At the time, Williams had been shifted into three teams over three months and felt like it was all over for him. However, Rivers convinced him to stay.

Rivers calls himself the “sixth man whisperer”. Having a good sixth man on the team is one of the most overlooked benefits of any team structure. It was Coach Rivers who made Williams stay with the team and he had his role completely mapped out. Williams signed with the Clippers in 2017 and in his stint of nearly four years, he was Sixth Man of The Year, twice. “I will always give him credit for putting me back on my feet”, the 36-year-old said about his ex-coach.
