We now know where Reggie Miller got his killer competitive fire. Having a skilled sibling in the house always means there’s competition. Miller grew up alongside three talented and athletic siblings. He never had a moment to catch his breath. His sister, 2X NCAA champion and basketball icon Cheryl Miller, recently shared some candid stories from their childhood.
In the latest episode of The Mark Jackson Show, Cheryl admitted that the siblings often teased and bullied young Reggie for being the shortest and smallest in the family. “Reggie was kind of like growing up, he was the runt of the family. He was smaller, tinier than everybody,” Cheryl stated on the podcast. The basketball legend also had pronated knees requiring to wear a cast. “So he just, so he got picked on in the family,” Miller recalled.
The Indiana Pacers legend also had a hip deformity when he was young which made it difficult for him. Well, that was only because he was still very young. But slowly, with time, Cheryl admitted how her brother worked hard and continued to get more dominant than the rest of her siblings. “So Reggie naturally grew up with a huge chip on his shoulder. Super competitive. Hated to be beaten…Now, I’m to blame for the chip. But Saul Jr. and Daryl contributed. But that was how Reggie was,” Cheryl said.

As a young aspiring player, there was this one moment when he thought he almost had the chance to beat his siblings. Miller had notched up a 40-point game and couldn’t wait to boast of it to his siblings and parents. And he did that.
But just when he turned to his sister, Reggie realized that it still wasn’t his time to outshine his sister. Miller had hit a 105-point performance the same day. It was only after an intense one-on-one matchup, where Reggie blocked a shot powerfully, that Cheryl realized her brother’s true potential.
That was when Miller stopped risking a challenge against her brother, who was almost 6’7 by then. “He pinned my shot. The next thing I know, I was in the kitchen, and that’s the last time I played Reggie one-on-one,” Cheryl shared almost proudly. The competitiveness also had a part in it that constantly fueled his spirits. Now, as we see, Reggie is one of the fittest athletes, still keeping his competitive edge in cycling.
