In the last few years, Jayson Tatum has soared to remarkable heights. The 5x NBA All-Star won his first NBA title with the Celtics. As he ascends to stardom, there have also been critics doubting his talents. Recently, a cold verbal exchange was seen between Tatum and 2008 Mr. Basketball USA, Brandon Jennings. After the exchange, the former NBA player received a quick reality check from another retired NBA All-Star.

The first one to question Jennings’ comment was the crew on Gil’s Arena podcast. Recently, Kenyon Martin also argued with Jennings. Jennings had an issue which is why Tatum didn’t win the NBA Finals MVP honor despite being touted as the best. Following this, he went on to claim that he might not be the best. Jalen Brown won the honor. However, on the other hand, Martin claimed that while Tatum might not have won the MVP honor, the Celtics couldn’t have won without him.

“I got a question so B. So you told him if he’s not go out and win Finals MVP right? That has nothing to do with his play. He played his a** off they don’t win it without him…People voted for the other guy; that didn’t mean he didn’t do his job,Martin claimed.

However, Jennings continued to argue that if Tatum were considered the best player and face of the NBA by people, then he should have won the MVP honor. Moreover, he also backed up his claims by bringing up how Tatum sat on the sidelines most of the time during the Olympics. Tatum not starting the games was one of the complaints highlighted by fans as well.

Martin countered by saying that just because he didn’t win the MVP doesn’t mean he didn’t do his part in leading the Celtics to victory. “Jaylen Brown did what he was supposed to do in the Finals to help them win but they don’t get there without the play of the guy that made first team all NBA,” he said.

The drama began with Jennings calling Tatum the softest and Tatum’s response after that.

Jayson Tatum’s subtle response to Brandon Jennings’ claims

In an episode of Gil’s Arena, the former NBA player called Tatum “the softest Boston Celtics superstar ever.” Eager fans were looking forward to Tatum’s response. However, the 5x NBA All-Star simply dismissed all the criticisms.

After the recent game that saw the Boston Celtics handed a 114-97 loss to the Sacramento Kings, both Joe Mazzulla and Tatum responded to the comments. “I wasn’t mad. It comes with being one of the best players in the league. The more you accomplish, the more it gives people the opportunity to nitpick,” Tatum said. While the coach didn’t drop any names but his comments wasn’t so subtle.

“Sometimes the older you get, the better you were as a player. You forget, like – and that’s everybody, people say that. So if we all just kind of remembered what we were then we probably wouldn’t have so many opinions of other people,” Mazzulla said. The debate isn’t likely to end anytime soon and as Jennings said June will be here soon.
