After the Los Angeles Lakers, it’s now the Detroit Pistons in search of a new head coach. The Pistons recently fired Monty Williams despite making him the richest head coach in NBA history just last year. The Pistons signed a six-year deal worth $78.5 million with Williams, but now the team needs new shoulders to carry its championship aspirations. While there are speculations around multiple names, Dwight Howard has suggested his former teammate from the Lakers, Rajon Rondo.

The NBA champ believes Rondo to be a person who just is what the Pistons need as of now. “Man give Rondo a Head coach job at Detroit I bet he turn everything around !” he posted on X. Notably, this is not the first instance that someone has spotlighted Rondo’s coaching potential. During an episode of his show, Draymond Green had once stated he considers the 38-year-old as the GOAT in-game IQ.

Even LeBron James had stated something along similar lines for Rondo’s coaching potential. In an episode of ‘Mind the Game’ podcast, Bron mentioned he believes Rondo has a higher basketball intellect than any other NBA star. In fact, the King wondered why the 2x NBA champ was not coaching at a high level. It’s no surprise the Lakers themselves are looking for Rondo as a prospect for JJ Redick’s coaching staff.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line recently reported this. “The Lakers, meanwhile, are said to be seeking two former NBA head coaches for Redick’s staff — if they can find two — to assist Redick. Scott Brooks and Rajon Rondo are frequently mentioned as strong candidates for assistant roles in L.A,” he said. But if Rajon Rondo has to, he himself would want to aim higher. And the Pistons’ job could be it, but what does the franchise have in its mind?

According to NBA reporter Evan Sidery, the speculations around James Borrego getting the job are strong. He mentioned Detroit’s President of Basketball Operations, Trajan Langdon, has worked alongside Borrego in New Orleans. Apart from this, a team source has confirmed four names that are under consideration.

While one of them is Borrego itself, the other three include Dallas Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney, Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, and former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. As per ‘Detroit Free Press’, the source wants to stay anonymous, for the details are still to be worked through.

It is worth mentioning Sweeney and Nori were assistants on former Pistons coach Dwane Casey’s staff from 2018 to 21. However, the media reports as of now suggest a strong tilt towards Borrego for his experience with the Pistons’ new head of basketball ops, who was once the Pelicans’ general manager. Dwight Howard seems to be the first one to put Rajon Rondo’s name in the mix.
