Even though NBA athletes get a ton of the credit for tuning in fans, and rightfully so, there are certain others instrumental to the league’s success who remain rather underappreciated. While the stars make moments, another group is responsible for immortalizing them. That role is for the commentators, often a thankless job. Whether it be iconic calls or signature catchphrases, the commentary team brings a certain exuberance to the sport. Even Paul Pierce understands their importance to the league.

On commentary for last year’s Eastern Conference Finals rematch, The Truth had some heartwarming words for one in particular.

Even though the focus was on a tight contest between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, major attention came to the interaction between the legend and the commentary team.

During the interaction, Pierce, along with his 2008 Championship-winning teammate Brian Scalabrine gave props to one man. Mike Gorman, a name synonymous with Boston basketball was on the receiving end of some well-deserved praise from the duo.

The White Mamba first brought to light the connection between Gorman and Pierce. “Mike claims you’re his favorite Celtic.” Paul was quick to return the favor. “It’s an honor man. Sitting here, being able to play here, and have the voice of the Celtics announcing games is truly an honor man.”

Further, the 2008 Finals MVP went into detail about the conversations the two would share. “Have a conversation about who the refs are, how the night’s gonna be.” The 46-year-old had some high praise for Mike as he gave him the title of a “second coach”, stating that the legendary voice would give him tips and reminders about the upcoming matchup.

As Mike Garmon suits up for his final year as a commentator in the NBA, he is one of the several icons in the sport.
