Patrick Beverley: Overpaid journeyman or underappreciated defensive genius? What's your take on his career earnings?

Not many would have guessed that Patrick Beverley, with his modest start, would carve out such a long and lucrative career in the NBA. After all, he wasn’t exactly a standout when he first entered the league, but his tenacity and defensive grit kept him around for over a decade. From the Houston Rockets to a whirlwind tour with seven different teams, Beverley managed to cement himself as one of the league’s most fiery competitors. And along the way? He racked up quite the bank account.

Though his draft moment came in 2009, Beverley didn’t make an immediate splash; he was cut during the final roster adjustments before the season even began. His path from there was anything but smooth—a mix of setbacks, international stints, and a relentless drive to prove himself. Despite facing obstacles along the way, Beverley’s career has made many profitable agreements that have solidified his financial success in the league. Let’s dive into how this once-overlooked player racked up his impressive career earnings.

Initially, Beverley’s professional journey took him overseas, where he played for BC Dnipro in Ukraine. Little did he know, those early days abroad would be the foundation of his $13 million net worth. Beverley’s name was automatically entered into the NBA Draft in 2009 after showcasing impressive stats: 16.7 points and 7 rebounds per game. The Los Angeles Lakers picked him, but his NBA career truly began when the Miami Heat acquired his rights a day later in a trade.

However, Beverley’s NBA start wasn’t what most expected from the 42nd overall pick. Before he could even make his debut, Miami waived him, sending him to the courts in Greece and Russia. But Beverley’s persistence paid off in 2013 when he returned stateside, catching the eye of the Houston Rockets. They offered him a 3-year, $1.99 million deal, and he quickly showed he was worth every penny.

His performances only got better, leading to a major payday: a 4-year, $23 million contract in 2015. By 2017, Beverley earned his first and only NBA All-Defensive First-Team selection.

Beverley’s standout defensive skills made him a hot commodity, and the LA Clippers didn’t hesitate to invest in his talents. They signed him to a 3-year, $40 million contract, recognizing his unique value. But soon, the unforgiving nature of professional sports struck. Beverley was sidelined for the season after undergoing an arthroscopic lateral meniscus repair and microfracture procedure on his right knee.

Though he returned the following year, injuries inevitably took a toll on his performance. The double-digit scoring averages he once posted became increasingly elusive.

By 2021, Beverley was on the move again, first traded to the Memphis Grizzlies and then to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he inked a 1 year, $13 million deal. His time there was short-lived, as he soon found himself donning the purple and gold for the LA Lakers. After just 45 games, Beverley was waived, only to land with the Chicago Bulls. The following year, he secured a 1-year, $3.2 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, before spending some time with the Milwaukee Bucks.

And just when it seemed like his NBA journey might be wrapping up, Beverley made headlines again with a potential “historic” European contract.

In July 2024, rumors were swirling about Patrick Beverley taking his talents across the Atlantic for the 2024-25 season. The 12-year NBA veteran didn’t shy away from the buzz either; he confirmed on his podcast’s X account that he was mulling over a “historic” contract offer from Europe.

Well, Beverley made it official, signing with Hapoel Tel Aviv BC in the Israeli Premier League after his long NBA run. According to Sportando, his deal is reportedly worth around $2 million for next season, with the potential to earn an extra $1 million in bonuses if the team wins the EuroCup and secures a spot in the EuroLeague.

Beverley made his on-court debut for Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv in August, getting a taste of European hoops for the first time. It’s early days, but Beverley’s already proving that his journey in Europe could be just as eventful as his NBA career.
