The Tech giant is ready for the new NBA season and is already considering a new face. From next season, Amazon will have the media rights for the league, unless a verdict against them is announced. And they are not looking at Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, or Ernie Johnson. In fact, they are probing for a recently retired player who had a 15-year career.
Front Office Sports reported that former Clippers star Blake Griffin is in the race to be the new analyst. One of the sources also confirmed with Michael McCarthy that the 35-year-old could potentially be “the face” of Prime’s coverage. Recently, even The Athletic reported that Prime will create original theme music for its 60-game package for the coverage of the game on Thursdays and Fridays.
Not just Prime, but the reports also suggested that ESPN and NBC are in the race. “A lot of people are very interested in him. Blake is making the rounds.” But the role from the Tech giant will be similar to what Charles Barkley is doing with TNT. Blake Griffin could lead the show, but McCarthy also informed that it was unclear what kind of role the former ROTY was looking for at the time. But it won’t be the first time that Griffin would be performing in front of a live audience.

Ever since he moved to the Clippers, he has been enamored by the comedy scene. The 6x All-Star tried several open mics and later accepted the three-day internship program. It came at a time during the 2011 NBA lockout, so Blake Griffin wrote multiple sketches and scripts. Apart from Comedy Tours, he started a production company in 2016 alongside Former NFL star Ryan Kalil.

Mortal Media even successfully launched two projects, a reboot of ‘White Men Can’t Jump,’ and the sci-fi comedy, ‘Hello Tomorrow!’ That’s not it, the company also secured a future multiyear first-look deal with Sony. Similarly, before agreeing on a deal with TNT, there was a possibility that Charles Barkley could have joined Amazon.
Charles Barkley had a plan to leave TNT
The 76ers legend was shooting in all directions, as he was angry with his bosses for keeping the future in the dark. It was during the time when TNT was still figuring out to close the deal with the league. However, fans were wondering how to keep ‘The Inside Show‘ alive if the WBD-led company lost the rights.

At the time, Charles Barkley floated the idea that he was looking forward to hire the crew under his production house. Dan Patrick loved the idea, and Pat McAfee, who has a similar licensing deal with ESPN, too agreed with the idea. Eventually, as we know, Chuck agreed to stay with TNT but explained that he had an ‘exit clause.’
Just like the majority of the fans, even the Inside crew is treating it as the final swansong for the show. But how will it affect their contracts and will the network air the show with different sports? With all this uncertainty, it seems Amazon wants to go ahead and lock its panel. And that’s why they are potentially looking at Blake Griffin to lead their show.
