Is Steph Curry's shooting prowess enough to crown him the greatest point guard over Magic Johnson?

I love Steph Curry and his family, but we all know who’s one and who’s two,” said Magic Johnson. Last year, the 65-year-old during the Jimmy Kimmel Show made it clear about the best PG of all time. However, the debate about Stephen Curry or the Lakers legend being better won’t stop anytime soon. But Andre Iguodala chose another player who beat the previous two in a key record.

You had some great point guards, you know, Chris Paul was Chris Paul. Like Chris Paul never gets the respect that he deserves like he’s one of the best point guards of all time.” The 4x NBA Champion chose the 5x Assist leader over Stephen Curry and Magic Johnson. Interestingly, the Lakers legend has been at the top of the assist charts four times, but Curry has none to his name. However, in 2021, the list of Iguodala was completely different.

Magic (Johnson), Steph (Curry), Isiah Thomas. They’re the only guys that I will allow you to say are better than Kyrie,” Andre Iguodala said. In a conversation with TMZ, he pointed out his top 4 and said he might consider Chris Paul in the conversation. So it’s a surprise that this time, he didn’t speak about other legends. But that doesn’t mean former teammate Iguodala forgot Chef Curry’s contribution.

Steph is a better defender than people realize. Like, even when people would try to go at him, they would struggle to get the bucket, and I’m like, they actually taken away from him slowing themselves down. They don’t have the same rhythm,” said the 40-year-old on Mark Jackson’s podcast. “The ball ain’t moving and they spending more energy than they would like trying to get a bucket on them.”

Even former president Barack Obama, during the promotion of ‘Starting 5,’ chose Curry as his PG. “I want a little shooting and a little flair. I’m gonna put my friend Steph Curry into the mix because we’re in the three-point era and he’s the greatest shooter of all time, bar none.” But what does Magic Johnson feel about the whole debate? He gave a checklist for any player to be the #1 point guard.

Another Warriors star overlooked Magic Johnson

Apart from the appearance during the Kimmel show, the 5x NBA Champion also gave a scathing reply regarding the debate, “If he’s got more than 5 championships, more than 3 Finals MVPs, 3 league MVPs, #1 assists all-time in the Finals then he’s the greatest… but the last time I checked, he doesn’t.”

Is Steph Curry's shooting prowess enough to crown him the greatest point guard over Magic Johnson?

Have an interesting take?

So, Magic Johnson wants Curry to beat his records in order to etch his name in his books. But Baron Davis doesn’t feel so. He said, “So when you look at Steph Curry, Steph Curry comes down, he already at an advantage because he’s the greatest point guard to play.” The selection criteria for Davis was also because of the scoring option that Curry creates by being an elite shooter.

The traditional positions and play styles have significantly changed. Now each player is required to be an active shooter amongst other things. So when Magic Johnson played in the league, his no-look style passes were a novelty and encouraged. Since Curry came into the league, the resurgence from 3-point shooting has been remarkable. So it’s obvious when the debate is between the two. That’s why when Iguodala chose Chris Paul, it was a surprise.
