Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics legend, was known for dominating the court with his personality. The NBA veteran has a whopping 11 rings for the Celtics in just 13 seasons. In 1996, Celtics named Russell the first African-American player-coach of a professional sports team in the United States. He led the Boston Celtics as a player and a coach at the same time.

During game 5 of the NBA finals between the Boston Celtics and the Houston Rockets, Bill Russell was one of the announcers, along with Rick Barry.?Barry?won?an?NBA?championship?with?the?Golden State Warriors and?was?also?named?the?MVP. Barry was also famous for his underarm free-throw shooting style.

During the game, Barry showed Russell some photos of the 1956 men’s Olympic basketball team. The team which Russell had led to a gold medal. Rick then made a comment, which eventually cost him the job.?

?Now here it is. There’s this picture and… who do you think that guy is there? I know it looks like some fool over there at that big watermelon grit on the left.?

The term ?watermelon grin? had racial connotations. The amount of racist tensions during that time made the situation worse.?

However, Bill Russell ignored Barry for the rest of the game. Later that final CBS, the television company, went on to fire the ex-MVP for his comments.?

Unfortunately, many star athletes have faced racial discrimination in their careers. Even the greatest players weren’t spared, including the GOAT, Michael Jordan, himself.
