“We want to win championships. I got 14, we need 15.” Magic Johnson made his intentions clear when two months ago he became part of the ownership group for his latest team. In the meantime, his ‘ring’ collection reached number 15 thanks to his “beloved” Dodgers, who won the World Series in 2024. Speaking about the new team, they are on the path to collecting their championship, and the 5x NBA Champion can’t hide his excitement.
“Heading to another championship!! Congratulations to my partner Michele Kang, @WashSpirit Manager Jonatan Giraldez, all of the Spirit players and our fans across the country for advancing to the NWSL Championship Game!”
That’s not all, the Lakers legend also celebrated by proclaiming, “I’m going for another championship,” and did a little shimmy dancing to express his enthusiasm for his latest ownership team. In September, Magic Johnson joined the ownership group of Washington Spirits consisting of Michele Kang. Who purchased it back in 2021-22 at a valuation of $35 million. According to Sportico’s valuations, the Spirit is worth $54 million today.

For Spirits to continue Magic Johnson’s path of winning, they need to win on penalty kicks. They defeated the current champions NJ/NY Gotham FC, in what turned out to be a second consecutive game, at Audi Field, which was a sellout. They have now secured a berth for next weekend’s game for the NWSL Championship.

Acquiring another team in Washington after his NFL side Commanders was not only a business decision. Two months ago, when the announcement was official, the 3x Finals MVP deep-dived with his reasoning.

Have an interesting take?
When Michele Kang took responsibility for the team, she became the first woman of color to hold a majority stake in an NWSL team. The team has seen success when they were able to triple their average attendance in two years. The unprecedented growth in fan engagement led to fans flocking in and the numbers rose from 5,000 to 14,000.

“I love sports. I love to be in the ownership because it’s important that they see minorities in an ownership position. Magic Johnson spoke to CBS Mornings. “I love helping the athletes transition from their sport to hopefully business or whatever they want to do after their time being an athlete.” That’s why he has more rings as an owner/executive than as a player.
All his previous and current teams in Los Angeles have rewarded him with championships. From Lakers, he won 5 in the ownership role but sold his stake in 2010. Next, LA Sparks, in 2016, and Dodgers in 2020 and in 2024. Plus, his MLS side LAFC was the victor in the MLS Cup in 2022. Hopefully, Magic Johnson’s manifestation of another ring could come true once again with the Spirits.
