A lot of memories flooded back for fans when Mike Tyson’s bout against Jake Paul was announced. While the results seemed unpredictable, they became more pronounced as the fight progressed. The seasoned pro boxer ultimately lost to Jake in an eight-round heavyweight match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Before the unanimous decision was announced, one of Tyson’s dedicated fans, Magic Johnson, who was closely following the game, couldn’t continue watching.
Iron Mike has long dominated the ring, with celebrities like Magic Johnson cheering for the legend from the crowd. It was tough for him to watch Tyson lose. Taking to social media, Johnson wrote, “Just sad smh. I cut it off because I couldn’t watch anymore. It’s sad to see Mike Tyson like this because I went to every Tyson fight. This fight tonight was not great for boxing.”
Tyson’s age was a concern for many. Previously, Charles Barkley was among those who expressed doubts about the 58-year-old pro boxer. While he sided with Paul, Barkley hoped that the pro boxer who used to be his neighbor wouldn’t get hurt. Boasting an impressive 50 wins in the past, Iron Mike was a legend in the ’80s.

However, the reality was that the skilled and experienced Tyson now faced a much younger opponent, 27-year-old Paul, marking the largest age gap in professional boxing history. This was evident during the bout. A point that was later highlighted by many. Former NFL player Robert Lee Griffin III shared the same sentiments as Johnson.

Taking to social media, he wrote, “This is truly heart breaking to watch 58 year old Mike Tyson in the ring right now.” Well, Iron Mike isn’t ready to retire. He has even openly challenged Paul’s older brother, Logan Paul, to a fight. But it seems, it is the fans who seemingly might not want the legend who dominated inside the ring, back in action again.

Like the Los Angeles Lakers legend and Griffin, there were many comments that reflected relief that despite losing, the boxing legend finished the match safely and without injuries. NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith shared a similar sentiment on social media. “Love @MikeTyson . Always have, always will. But 58 is 58. Plus the legs just wasn’t there. Old is old. Thank God he didn’t get knocked out. Now it’s time for @jakepaul to get in the ring with a Top-10 fighter — or Hell, a Champion. No more BBall players, strikers from MMA, or old men. It’s time for Jake to get into a real fight. He’s good enough! Make it happen.” Smith wrote.
The YouTuber turned boxer Jake debuted in 2020 and has accumulated wins against Ben Askren, Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley, among others. Originally scheduled for July, the bout between Tyson and Mike was postponed due to the 58-year-old needing medical attention for an ulcer flare-up. Opinions on the fight varied widely. Some viewers expressed disappointment, feeling Tyson didn’t put in his full effort, while others were dissatisfied with the matchup itself.

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell wrote, “Please someone get Mike outta there,” while the Atlanta Hawks star, Trae Young, wrote, “Mike not even swinging dawg..” Even viewers without expertise in boxing found the fight underwhelming. WNBA star Arike Ogunbowale, unfamiliar with how these bouts typically roll, called it one of the weakest matchups she’d seen. “So I’m at the fight. & I’m not a boxing expert…but that was the weakest fight I’ve ever seen,” she wrote.
Well, clearly, this battle against Jake might be Tyson’s last bout, or else there would be another difficult watch ahead for Johnson.
