Did Kenyon Martin's defense ever truly deserve the spotlight, or is Nick Young's reality check justified?

Nick Young went a bit too straightforward with a cold hard fact. There are certain unfair mysteries in the NBA. One such is former NBA star Kenyon Martin, who was never named to an All-Defensive team. This has always bothered Martin and those who watched him guard. However, he believes he knows the reason. After his latest rant, KMart quickly got a wake-up call from Nick Young.

In the latest segment of the show Gil’s Arena, KMart admitted his frustration over being snubbed from the All-Defensive team. Young, who wasn’t initially aware of this, quickly understood why it might have happened. He made a hilarious comment, suggesting that KMart could have avoided the snub by being a bit more likable, which left the entire crew, including Martin, cracking up.

“Because you’re angry. (expletive) don’t like you. If (expletive) liked you. You’d have one. You’re too angry. You try to punk David Stern s**t… You do that Brother Knowledge sh*t now, you wasn’t Brother Knowledge then,” Young claimed.

Interestingly, KMart would likely agree with Young. On numerous occasions, the 2× First-team All-Conference USA player has expressed that he didn’t make the All-Defensive team because he wasn’t particularly likable. Young simply delivered that grounding moment in a humorous way.

Regardless, it doesn’t change the fact that Martin was a relentless force on the court, capable of guarding anyone. During his appearance on the Buckets podcast, he himself admitted the reason behind his snub.

Kenyon Martin declared that his “loud” attitude wasn’t liked by people

As Young pointed out, the former #1 pick also admitted that the snub had a lot to do with his personality. “Some people didn’t like me. I was loud. I probably talk to them [media] after the game. Told them to kiss my a** or something,” KMart revealed.

While it’s a bit tricky to understand the personality part, he definitely said some unpleasant words to the media during his playing days. “I don’t read what you write… somewhere along those lines probably,” Martin confessed to having said that to the media. That explains a lot about Young’s comment.

That is regrettable, considering he was arguably one of the best defenders in the league during his time, coming off as the Bearcats’ all-time leader in career blocked shots. Former Denver Nuggets coach George Karl shared a similar view. Praising Martin for his versatile defensive skills, he said, “He [takes] responsibility, he [wants] the guy. I’ve seen coaches orchestrate [defenses], but I’ve never seen a player orchestrate [like] that.”

It was a bit too straightforward from Young, but perhaps other veterans who also disagree with Martin’s snub share a similar opinion.
