Magic Johnson’s hopes to have a 15th championship ring crashed this season but he’s still buzzing after witnessing his first Super Bowl as an NFL team owner. After that thrilling overtime showdown that saw the Kansas City Chiefs win back-to-back titles, Magic Johnson was promptly on X. He was hyped for the stars of the game, including the Halftime headliner and the new MVP.
“What a terrific and exciting game! Having Super Bowl LVIII go into overtime was great for our league and we got a tremendous performance by Usher at halftime!” he wrote on X after the 25-22 victory for the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes found Mecole Hardman for the walk-off touchdown in the nail-biting overtime minutes. It secured him the MVP title for the third time in his career. It’s an honor Earvin “Magic” Johnson believes he rightfully deserved.
“Patrick Mahomes worked his late game magic once again to seal a 25-22 Super Bowl overtime win over the 49ers! Back-to-back wins for the Chiefs and he earned his third MVP award…WOW!” wrote the NBA legend with a couple of emojis.

As the Los Angeles Lakers legend said, Mahomes struck when it mattered. The 49ers were up by 3 in overtime. That’s when he led the Chiefs to the title. He is tied with HoF-er Joe Montana for the second-most Super Bowl MVPs in NFL history, two short of Tom Brady at No. 1. He’s the third player to ever win the MVP title in consecutive seasons.

Magic Johnson’s eye is on the prize
In July 2023, Magic Johnson became part of the Washington Commanders’ ownership group in a $6.05 billion deal. Combined with his 5 NBA titles and his stakes in sports franchises, he’s won a combined 14 championships in his lifetime. The new billionaire was hoping the Commanders would win him his first Super Bowl ring.
That, however, didn’t pan out. The Commanders were officially eliminated from playoff contention after a 28-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in December 2023. Magic Johnson’s X posts weren’t positive leading up to it. He scolded his team while fans appealed to him to make changes within the coaching staff.

Seemingly, Magic and his associates took heed. Head Coach Ron Rivera was replaced with Dan Quinn. It, however, shocked fans when Eric Bieniemy was let go as offensive coordinator. He’s the former Chiefs’ offensive coordinator who won Super Bowls before and most thought he’d flourish with Quinn. With the drastic structural changes in the team, it’s clear Magic is not leaving his hopes next season to chance.
