The NFL-based Washington Commanders is headed towards a new era with a novel group of owners. A significant member of the group is NBA legend Magic Johnson, who shared his enthusiasm for joining the group on his social handles.

It was a moment of honor for the legend to be a part of an NFL outfit. Indeed, the five-time NBA champion got emotional as he talked about this new opportunity and the responsibility that comes with it.

In an interview with NBC, Johnson talked about the great opportunity that was bestowed upon him. For the legend, the ownership was much more than a strategic business move. Despite his history-making NBA career, he even considered it “one of the biggest things” he has acquired in his life.

Magic was teary-eyed as he said, “This is a great opportunity. I don’t know why God blessed me with these opportunities, but I want to excel, not only for myself but [for] my family. But for all African Americans, making sure we can see ourselves in these seats. I want people to know that we can do the job.”

As a football fan, he is ecstatic about the new ownership and took to Twitter to share his happiness with the fans. He said, I grew up playing football as a kid, I’m a huge NFL fan, and I watch games every week. Now, I get to co-own a storied franchise, the Washington Commanders.” 

In his Twitter post, he also thanked Josh Harris and promised his commitment to the team’s development. But what went through the last few weeks to finalize the sale?

The story behind the sale of Washington Commanders

NFL owners unanimously approved the sale of the team on the 20th of July. Billionaire and co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, Josh Harris purchased the Washington Commanders, bringing an end to Snyder’s two-decade-long run.

The group finalized the deal at an astronomical $6.05 billion, making it one of the most expensive deals for a North American professional sports team. As mentioned before, the four-time NBA champion is also a part of the group. He keeps updating the fans about his new position in the NFL.
