Legendary Los Angeles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson is making waves. Even 27 years after retirement, the former player knows how to capture the media spotlight. This time, the NFL community is buzzing with excitement as the 5-time champion prepares to make his foray into the sporting league. Prior to this, Johnson has been a part owner of three other teams based in three other sports leagues —WNBA’s Sparks, MLB’s Dodgers, and MLS’s LAFC. Notably, all three are LA-based teams. Now, Johnson’s gone East!
Magic’s investment group agreed on a deal with the team a few months ago. Now, with approval in hand, Johnson was grooving to some music as he enters another historic stage of his life.

A few months ago, Johnson, along with Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris and a few others, acquired an ownership stake in the NFL team Washington Commanders. They secured the deal at a whopping $6.05 Billion.
Fans of Washington are delighted to see new ownership in town. Previous owners, Daniel and Tanya Snyder, left a bad name on the Commanders. And no, we’re not referring to the franchise’s first name change.
The league fined Dan Snyder $60 billion! An investigation found that Snyder physically harassed a team employee two decades ago. Furthermore, he also had knowledge of team executives withholding $11 million in revenue. Revenue that was supposed to be shared with the other teams. The findings of the investigation were summarized in a 23-page report.
In an interview with NBC’s ‘TODAY’ Show, the former Los Angeles Lakers player revealed that the team’s ownership means more to him than an investment. Stating that this is “the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life”, Johnson revealed that the deal has led him to break down barriers and create hope for other Black investors.
The NFL has never had a Black majority owner. Magic is one of three from his community to be a minority owner.
