The 2019 NBA Draft was one of the most memorable ones in recent years. That year’s draft gave us two of the most promising stars in the league. While there were other contenders like Rai Hachimura and Tyler Herro, people had a lot of hopes for these two. Years later, the narrative has changed.
Recently, NBA veteran Mark Jackson was asked about his take on the Zion Williamson and Ja Morant comparisons. These two were the #1 and #2 pick in the NBA draft respectively.

Jackson was asked if the New Orleans Pelicans were right to pick Williamson as their #1 pick. He said, “Going back to that draft, I said it…you couldn’t go wrong either way.” However, the 58-year-old believes that the way the game is played now, it’s better suited for Morant than it is for Williamson. “The way that the game was being played, you need a dynamic, permanent player to have sustained effectiveness moving forward.” Jackson said that the best teams in the league have dynamic playmakers on their squad as they help propel the game in the right direction.
“So I would’ve taken Ja Morant to the number 1 pick”, Jackson said. Although he clarified that there’s nothing he has against Zion, he believes that Morant fits the team structure that he would like to see play. Jackson said that his analysis of the two players is not new and that he has been saying it since the time they got drafted.
Now recently, both Zion and Morant have had to deal with their own problems. For example, Zion was being slammed for being overweight, which still continues today, and the month-long battle he had with his alleged girlfriend.

Morant on the other hand has been in the news a lot and for only wrong reasons. The Memphis Grizzlies star has been booked by the league several times for multiple incidents involving firearms. He was suspended by the league from the beginning of this season and could play his first game only last week.

Apart from some of their issues, both the athletes have a lot to offer, and their franchises know it. Which is why they have remained an integral part of the Pelicans and the Grizzlies’ setup. However, for Jackson to diminish Zion’s highlight moment, getting the #1 draft pick for Morant says a lot about the player an organization would prefer to have.
