The NBA has been ever-evolving. However, some practices have stayed the same, such as the phenomenon of NBA players who are friends off-court wanting to play together on the same team. Another is NBA players wanting certain other NBA players on their team in order to build a ‘Super team’ to win the NBA championship. However, it always was a mutual decision between the players and the coaching staff with the coach having the final say.

In a recent interview, an NBA Hall of Famer, whose skin color offended the great Michael Jordan, shames LeBron James in a maddening rant.

John Stockton was once in the direct firing range of the Chicago Bulls legend. In the popular TV docuseries Last Dance which release in 2020, Barkley had mentioned that during an NBA Finals game against Utah Jazz, Michael Jordan had taken offense to the fact that a “white guy” (John Stockton) was defending him.

The Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz had a thrilling rivalry in the 1990’s and I think every NBA fan would agree that both those teams were ‘super teams’. In a recent podcast interview, NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton firmly disagreed with the way LeBron has influence over the rosters.

He says, “It can be maddening for a teammate. You aren’t climbing the mountain, you’re taking the helicopter to the top.” He further adds, “I like guys who say, ‘Okay, this is the situation. Let’s work on it to make things better instead of changing the entire environment around the problem.'”

The female co-host sides with the NBA Hall of Famer as she says, “I agree that it changes the whole dynamic of a team when you have a star player like that, who has the ability to make a decision at any moment and have an ear of the front office.”

She further adds, “This is the modern NBA. It’s different than any league out there. No other league has a star player that can literally dictate who they want on the team, where they want to go and that’s got to be frustrating for a teammate that’s not on that level.”

However, Nick Wright has a different opinion.

Is LeBron’s ‘Super Team’ strategy right for the spirit of the game?

Nick Wright says, “We have to just look at the facts. His first time on the Cleveland Cavaliers team, he had no influence on the roster. It was an unmitigated disaster. The one teammate they got was Larry Hughes for Lou Williams who leaves in free agency.”

He further adds, “With the Miami heat, Pat Riley was running everything. He was not running anything then. When he gets back to Cleveland, he wanted them to trade for Kevin Love which they did. They instantly went from having the n0.1 pick in drafts from 3-4 years to having reached the NBA finals for four consecutive years.”

The American TV host further explains, “When he moved to the West and broke the young Lakers team to bring in Anthony Davis, they instantly won an NBA championship. He also pushed for the Russell Westbrook trade which obviously was a disaster.”

Nick Wright stands firm on his opinion that majority of the time LeBron has made the right decision in acquiring players to win an NBA championship and there is nothing wrong with it.

In the modern NBA, it really does not matter if players try to make ‘super teams’ because NBA has abundant talent. In a professional sport where every year there is a new batch of young NBA players who almost always have a definitive edge over the veterans in terms of physicality, it doesn’t matter if there are too many star players in one team.
