“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” Gabrielle Union revealed in her 2017 book. The Hollywood star and Dwyane Wade had to endure a lot of pain before finally welcoming their daughter, Kaavia, via surrogacy. While her IVF treatment wasn’t successful, she also faced some severe side effects during the process. The Bring It On actress opened up about the difficulties she faced and how it inspired her to start her entrepreneurial journey.
On the CBS Morning Show with Gayle King, Union shared her story and said, “After going through multiple rounds of IVF, I was losing a lot of hair and I wanted to try to come up with products that addressed my hair.” She added, “But we wanted to make sure that the products were safe…narrowed the profit margin. We choose not to exploit people who need this. Accessible, affordable and effective.”

Flawless was launched by Union in 2017 as a hair-care brand. While it started off with a bang, it suddenly vanished from shelves. That may be due to her ongoing IVF troubles at the time. Nonetheless, she relaunched it in 2020 with the help of her hair stylist, Larry Sims, and the two haven’t looked back since.
Not just the quality, but both Union and her stylist ensured to make the products affordable to those who are in need. The actress also spoke about her other brand, Proudly, which was started in collaboration with her husband Wade. The inspiration behind the brand is also drawn from their 5-year-old Kaavia. She certainly came as a blessing to the Wade household.
While the actress was heartbroken from her previous miscarriages, Wade was also devastated to watch his wife constantly struggle with her IVF treatment. Ultimately, he convinced her to opt for surrogacy.
