Is Magic Johnson's commitment to HIV awareness setting a new standard for celebrity philanthropy?

Magic Johnson’s name has long been synonymous with excellence. Since his shocking HIV diagnosis in 1991, the point guard has transformed himself from a legendary athlete into a beacon of hope and an advocate for HIV awareness and treatment through his organization ‘The Magic Johnson Foundation’. Now, the former Los Angeles Lakers veteran has shared a personal note.

The 65-year-old recently took to his Instagram to share the news of his latest investment of $31 million with the company ‘Alchemy‘ and also gave a reason that why this investment is so important for him. “Investing in Alchemy is deeply personal, not only as a person living with HIV, but because I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impacts of HIV in our communities. Alchemy’s commitment to eliminating barriers to care and serving the underserved through building and operating in-house pharmacies for HIV clinics is a mission I’m proud to support!” wrote Johnson in the caption.

So what is Alchemy? The San Franciso based company was founded in 2023 with the aim of providing services to pharmacies for Federally Qualified Health Centers and STD clinics. However, the company is primarily focused on educating people about the cause and prevention of diseases like HIV and Hepatitis b. Interestingly, the company has spent more than eighteen years working in Africa to set up HIV programs and pharmacies that provide prescribed medications to the needy and poor from the US.

The capital raising process for ‘Alchemy’ was initiated by the finance firm ‘Andreessen Horowitz’ (aka A16Z) and the investors of this project included Magic Johnson, Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners, Banc of California, Twine Ventures, Springbank, and AlleyCorp. From the moment Johnson announced his HIV status to the world, he has been on a relentless quest to change the narrative around the disease. His foundation provides free HIV tests to over 250,000 individuals. Even the former president of the United States had also praised Johnson for his philanthropy. “They didn’t just help raise research dollars or educate the public. They moved us to think in an entirely new way about a condition affecting millions of people around the world — changing attitudes with the kind of grace and encouragement that only true leaders can display,” read the letter written by Obama to Johnson.
