In 2000, Darius Miles made the Los Angeles Clippers as the highest-drafted player right out of high school in NBA history. He escaped going to jail for his part in a scheme to cheat the league’s medical plan. As Miles once wrote, he was pulled over for speeding on 405 in Los Angeles one day because he was running late for Clippers’ practice. It turned out to be Shaquille O’Neal, who was driving the unmarked police car.

As an honored assistant sheriff and a person who likes to pull pranks on people, Shaquille O’Neal is also somewhat connected with police officers.

For some reason, Shaq pulled Darius over on the road one time, which made Darius late for team practice. He didn’t say no when he joked that Shaquille O’Neal was going to pay the fine for Darius being late.

Darius Miles once opened up about his road to the NBA, the silliness of life in the league, and his bad luck off the court in a must-see interview that came out almost a decade after his last NBA game with the Memphis Grizzlies, in the article “What the Hell Happened to Darius Miles?” in the Players’ Tribune.

Miles talked about his time playing for Donald Sterling, who was the owner of the Clippers at the time, and his hard times growing up in East St. Louis. He also told a funny but a little alarming incident about Shaquille O’Neal, a former star player for the Lakers.

Several places in the country, from Arizona to Florida, have sworn O’Neal in as a backup cop. In 2002, the Port of Los Angeles made him a backup officer. But it’s not clear if O’Neal had the right to stop Miles at the time.
