It was one of those days when basketball felt secondary. Where everyone went quiet, and every player at the EYBL woke up with a pit in the stomach.

There was no buzzer, no warning—just the shock that Mike Law was gone. Coach Law was one of those good men who didn’t mind staying off the radar and still committed fully. He earned himself a reputation as SoCal basketball’s foundational figure, guiding players to the top. Long before they even wore a jersey, just a ball in their hands, under his watch, was enough.

Coaching for California Supreme and Team Why Not, he coached future NBA stars like Devin Booker, Aaron Gordon, Matisse Thybulle, and Lonzo Ball. However, Mike didn’t just work towards the welfare of the basketball community, but also dedicated his time and resources towards philanthropy. “Neutral Grounds,” located in Los Angeles, is a non-profit organization developed by him that looks after youth in gang-infected areas. Another one of his initiatives involves purchasing and redeveloping properties to provide affordable housing for low-income families in LA.

His passing unleashed a wave of grief across every platform—many shared memories, gratitude, and shock. That’s what every social media platform witnessed. Tarek Fattal posted, “Mike Law was at everything hoops related, it seemed. He always took time to say hello and give undivided attention. Without fail, he’d be wearing a ball cap, sweatsuit, fresh kicks — and his trademark smile. I JUST saw him at CIF finals. Life is but a vapor. RIP Mike Law” showcasing well enough, how warm and welcoming Coach Law was. But comments under Tarek’s post were the true reflection of how all of us felt.

A commenter said, “RIP to another legend in this grassroots space!”, highlighting the legacy he had built around mentoring young talent for the Elite Youth Basketball League at Amateur Athletic Union.

Another user commented, referring to his intrinsic ability to comfort people, “There was something validating about his smile. If your team played poorly or suffered a frustrating loss, he would just smile and give a pleasant greeting, but not offer unsolicited advice or any type of condescension. He was one to validate your worth as a person. A gentleman.” An observation that athletes and fans can recognize.

“Mike supported our community like no other.  He always expressed such great joy and love, kind words and hugs for all.  Mike simply had no peer in SoCal sports, he was a unique force, and we were blessed to know him.  Mike will be dearly missed.  Rest in peace…” said another user, putting on display his dedication towards community welfare.

Multiple people came forward to express gratitude for his support – “Sleep in peace to real-1. Unk Always encouraged me to see it through when I was young in the business trying to climb.” This is just a fraction of the love that poured in. He was, after all, the ‘Unk’ everyone looked up to.

His approach, which was filled with positivity and genuine support, earned him a place in everyone’s hearts. He was more than just a coach; he was a mentor, an uncle. His guidance even extended to the personal lives of his mentees. He was determined to build a socially responsible youth through his coaching programs and otherwise too.
