Is Michael Jordan's $70M jet a symbol of success or a tone-deaf move in today's world?

Just like the No. 45, the year 2024 does not seem to agree with Michael Jordan. Evidently, the lore of Michael Jordan is facing some backlash from the fans for one thing or the other. First, it was the DPOY stat padding controversy, where MJ remained silent. Now the negative reaction from some sections of the fan is because of the stance of the 23XI Racing team against NASCAR. Amidst the legal dispute about the charter system, His Airness has made a purchase of $70 million on a private jet, disappointing his fans.

Michael Jordan’s new $70 million Gulfstream G650ER is incredible. The tail number is N236MJ and the custom paint job probably cost over $500,000.” Joe Pompliano shared the update on X regarding the billionaire’s latest purchase.

Known for the love of elephant print on previous jets and yachts, even the 2024 Gulfstream G650ER has the same print. Michael Jordan probably picked his new jet’s silver and black elephant print-themed paint job. And if somebody has any difficulty recognizing the latest purchase, one can spot the Jordan brand logo clearly.

The purchase of the latest jet makes sense because of its unbelievable power and speed. With a maximum speed of 0.925 Mach, the G650ER is a luxury jet that comes with two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines. It is definitely a luxury that MJ could easily afford, but the fans have a different outlook.

It is not the first time a billionaire has been criticized for their purchase. Especially the private jet addition to any celebrity locker, makes any fan question the issues about the nature. “Remember though we have to use paper straws to save the planet. ” The 2022 report from marketing agency, Yard, put Taylor Swift as the #1 celebrity polluter in the agency’s research.

Her carbon footprint was over 1,000 times the average person’s that year. That’s why one fan was reminding celebrities once again about the pollution. “But…climate change.” Apart from the strain on nature, one user pointed out the financial downside of owning a private jet. Founder of Tolou Capital Management, Spencer Hakimian called it a “Depreciating asset. Cool in the moment. Money down the toilet in reality. I’d rather sit first class Delta any day of the week.

It may not be a sound investment, but Michael Jordan reportedly made $350 million alone from Nike royalties. After all, his Jordan Brand crossed $7 Billion in revenue earlier this year. “Meanwhile dudes spending money on his shoes 😂😂😂.” Another netizen pointed out how the $70 million could have been spent. “You could put every poor kid in the southeast in Air Jordan’s for that amount But yeah, dope looking airplane.” But even they couldn’t stop and give compliments about the latest purchase.
