This year, the Minor League Baseball, the Chicago White Sox team celebrated a one-of-a-kind anniversary. In 1994, Michael Jordan retired and wanted to pursue his father’s unfulfilled dream of seeing MJ playing baseball. Since then, it’s been 30 years for the franchise when they saw His Airness don their jersey. Even though the stats do not reflect his basketball domination, it’s still a revered moment in the Jordan lore. That is why a fan bought the jersey in the first place.
“This is a Birmingham Baron Jersey signed by Michael Jordan. I think he only played maybe one or two years of the Barons and, um, I won it at an auction in 1996.”
At the North Carolina Museum of Art, a collector showcased MJ’s jersey from the Birmingham Barons. The Double-A minor league affiliate of the White Sox. Leila Dunbar, who runs Leila Dunbar Appraisals and Consulting, asked what the amount was: A modest $950.

Back then, nobody knew Michael Jordan would come back and win another three-peat. Dunbar then proceeded to reveal the current amount the jersey would get.
“So today, whether it’s baseball or basketball, Michael Jordan is still one of the most sought-after signatures and I think $950 was a good investment. Because I would put an auction estimate on this today of at least $2,000 to $3,000.”
What Dunbar said on Antiques Roadshow PBS, YouTube channel was correct. Recently, a trading card that contains a logo piece of one of Jordan’s shoes alongside the NBA icon’s autograph is available for $19,806. But that is after a 30% discount.
The card is called Michael Jordan 2022 Exquisite Collection Signature Kicks On-Card Patch Auto Nike. Yes, MJ was a special superstar. That’s why even his baseball run led to sold-out venues. But he wanted anything but the spotlight when he switched the sports.
Michael Jordan wanted to be away from the headlines
The Bulls legend had to abandon his love for baseball as he had to pursue his basketball career. But he never fell out of the game and after his father’s untimely death, he decided to leave hooping. Since the Sox owner was also the Bulls owner, there were no issues with the contract. In fact, Jerry Reinsdorf, honored the rest of MJ’s contract even though His Airness switched to baseball.

Also, MJ was appreciative of his time away from the spotlight, as he never complained about travel or accommodation. But his star power was never out of the question as the Birmingham Barons, the affiliate team he signed for, drew over 467,000 fans at home.
The MLB strike in 1995 made him fear that he’d be called up to the Majors. So, he returned to basketball for the second time, “I’m back.” With those words in a press statement, Michael Jordan made his intentions clear and would come back with redemption.
