Apart from being great at basketball, Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry share the same passion for golf. While Jordan’s love for golf is exemplified by his $20 million club, Grove XXIII, Curry has started his own golf tour with the Underrated banner. Months after His Airness rejected the idea of Steph being the GOAT NBA point guard, the two seem to be on another collision course. Curry is well aware of MJ’s competitive nature, and it wouldn’t be surprising if a head-to-head golf match between the two is announced soon thanks to the 4x champ’s recent claims.

In a recent interview at the Underrated Golf Tournament, the Warriors star didn’t hesitate when asked if he could beat His Airness in a golf matchup. “I could definitely beat Mr Michael Jordan in a game of golf. What I learned from him is the same competitive nature that he had as a basketball player and you can see why he’s great because the same way he was talking about basketball was the same way he was talking about golf,” Curry said.

The host was speaking about the interview Curry did with MJ back in 2022 at the Ryder Cup. When asked about what he learned from that interview, the 4x NBA champion said that MJ’s competitive spirit had really made an impact on him. He further emphasized how MJ had the same focus on golf as he did on basketball and that’s why he has been great at both sports.

“I was doing the interview and him being a part of that environment (Ryder Cup) because it reminds him of the competition that he was so used to in basketball. So same thing for me like, I love to compete, I love to win, I love to have fun too and golf provides that same type of opportunity,” Curry further added. He emphasized how Jordan hates to lose.

From golf mentality to the Ryder Cup, the two discussed various aspects of their favorite sport two years ago. Both are exceptional not only in basketball but also in golf. MJ is said to be so skilled that even some of the top golf pros find it challenging to compete against him. The 36-year-old was indeed deeply influenced by MJ’s approach to the game, but it appears he’s now using that same mentality to possibly battle against him. He’s already issued a challenge, but the question remains, will Jordan accept it?

While MJ is a fan of Curry, he wasn’t ready to call him the best. Jordan famously made a 5 a.m. call to Stephen A. Smith some time ago to clarify that he doesn’t agree with Curry’s claim of being a better point guard than Magic Johnson. It’s likely that he would have some reaction to Curry’s golf claims.

While taking a look back at the 2022 interview, we can see how both were quite passionate while talking about golf. These two have gone far beyond being just amateurs.

Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry’s passion for golf is unmatched

We’ve seen just how competitive Stephen Curry is when it comes to golf. The 36-year-old is known for eagerly accepting challenges. He even asked WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu to battle against him in a 3-point contest which he won. In terms of golf, after a disappointing loss to Charles Barkley in The Match: Champions for Change in 2020, his determination was only fueled up, leading him to win the American Century Championship in 2023.

For the Chicago Bulls legend, his love for the sport stems from how tough it is. He relishes the competition and the fact that, in golf, there’s no opponent but himself to conquer. “In basketball, I can always respond to an opponent, whether it’s a defensive or offensive situation. But in golf, you’re battling yourself consistently to try to achieve perfection with every swing, every putt,” Jordan once explained.

And as the Golden State Warriors star explained, it’s the complexity of the game and how there’s always something new to work toward. “I love golf for a lot of reasons. It’s probably the hardest sport to master. No matter how good you get, there’s always room for improvement,” Curry noted.
