“The work we do in the community is not for recognition,” Alonzo Mourning and his wife said about their efforts to make the world a better place. The champ has the heart of a true champion. If he has inspired millions with his playing style and defensive skills, he has impacted millions more with his work off the court. The champ started the Alonzo Mourning Charities Inc. back in 1997 to help young children and families at risk. This is just one of his many endeavors for the cause that touched the hearts of people.
And it’s not just money, he invests his time for the people as well. He was recently spotted at an event for Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High Biscayne Bay Campus. The 2x DPOY made an appearance at the 2025 South Police & Youth Conference, which was hosted by 5000 Role Models.
Former NBA player Glen Rice also joined Mourning to participate in the panel. Both shared their opinion and knowledge with the youths and law enforcement officers present. North Miami police chief Cherise Giordani Gause and a Coral Reef Senior High student Semaj Gilliard were also part of the panel.

The event is focused on improving community-police relationships with engaging conversations on understanding law enforcement and the community. In simple words, this will allow both the parties to understand each other better. This is a part of the 5,000 Role Models program by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. As per the Miami Herald, nearly 1,000 students gathered at the Kaseya Center. This was organized by the Miami Heat and the non profit Dedication 2 Community.

The NBA champ and his wife Tracy have raised nearly $25 million for youth development programs like Honey Shine and the Overtown Youth Center through the Mourning Family Foundation (MFF). Mourning was also awarded the “Mannie Jackson Basketball’s Human Spirit Award” for his contributions.
“They’ve spent more than a decade contributing directly to Miami-Dade County public schools in various ways. When you look at what they’ve done together, it’s directly impacted children,” School board member Martin Karp who suggested their name for the honor, said. This high school was started in an effort to relieve overcrowding at nearby schools, including Krop High School, North Miami High School, and North Miami Beach High School. Mourning has always been present for the school and continues to do so.
