Seven rings and no statue? Is Robert Horry the most underrated Laker of all time?

There’s just a month left for the unveiling of Dwyane Wade‘s statue at the Kaseya Center. While there has been an eager wait, many hopeful fans of other stars are looking forward to when their icon will be honored in the same way. 7x NBA champion Robert Horry recently mentioned a few names in the NBA world who deserve to be immortalized with a statue. While detailing the names, the Los Angeles Lakers legend also expressed his desire to receive such an honor.

Before the host could finish the question, the 7x champ threw in his wish, saying, “Me, motherf***er, me!” Horry played for four teams, with his first stint being with the Houston Rockets. When asked if he would like to be honored by the Rockets, he agreed, but his heart seemed to lean toward the Lakers, where he played for seven seasons, winning three titles.

He expressed a desire to stand among the Lakers greats such as Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Magic Johnson. “I would probably go with the Lakers because it’s such an iconic franchise,” Horry noted on the Big Shot Bob podcast.

He later jokingly negotiated, saying he’d even be fine with a small statue. He even humorously suggested it could be as tiny as the one to be put on legendary Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn’s statue’s desk. The host then suggested a pose for Horry’s statue. It was the pose while he made the buzzer-beating three-pointer that helped the Lakers secure a win over the Sacramento Kings in the 2002 Conference Finals.

Following Dwyane Wade, the 54-year-old also mentioned the players he believes should have their own statue but have yet to receive the honor.

Which NBA legend deserves a statue as per Robert Horry?

Big Shot Bob mentioned New York Knicks great Patrick Ewing. Not just Horry, but the entire basketball fandom feels the same way. Ewing is considered one of the most disappointing snubs regarding statue honors. Horry also emphasized what many of us feel. Although Ewing didn’t win a championship, his legacy deserves to be honored with a statue.

Furthermore, Horry mentioned Kevin Garnett as another snub. The hosts also expressed disappointment that Tim Duncan has yet to receive a statue. However, as Horry corrected later, the team indeed has installed a statue outside the practice site. However,  there isn’t any outside the AT&T Center in San Antonio. While many NBA greats have been honored with statues, legends like Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton, and Isiah Thomas are also yet to receive the recognition.

Receiving a statue carries a unique emotional meaning. “Forever Grateful,” Dwyane Wade remarked about his honor from the Miami Heat. His statue is set to be unveiled on October 27. Maybe it will be a start for more statues to come from other franchises as well.
