The 10x MLB All-Star passed away on Friday, and while the Oakland Athletics expressed being “shocked and heartbroken,” no details about the cause of his death were provided. For those who followed his legendary career, this loss feels deeply personal.

Yet another NBA star expressing a sense of personal loss was Matt Barnes. “This one hurt.. My favorite player growing up, finally got to meet him at Reggie Jackson’s game last month… I regret not getting a pic W my childhood idol,” he wrote on Instagram. The former NBA star further highlighted Henderson’s energy, just like his playing days, was special. “RIP To One Of The Greatest To Ever Do It,” Barnes wrote.

Over his extraordinary career, he recorded a .279/.401/.419 slash line with 297 home runs and 1,406 stolen bases. The Man of Steal remains the all-time leader in stolen bases, runs scored, and caught stealing. A testament to his unparalleled dominance.

“Rickey earned universal respect, admiration and awe from sports fans. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to Rickey’s family, his friends and former teammates, A’s fans and baseball fans everywhere,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement on Saturday.

As per an article by The Marca, the MLB legend lost the battle of his life after suffering from pneumonia. According to TMZ, Henderson took his last breath on Friday in the Oakland area after a brief stay in the hospital, where he was under treatment.

In a heartfelt statement, his wife, Pamela Henderson, shared, “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of my husband, Rickey Henderson. A legend on and off the field, Rickey was a devoted son, dad, friend, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a truly humble soul. Rickey lived his life with integrity, and his love for baseball was paramount.”

She continued, “Now, Rickey is at peace with the Lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind.” Pamela also expressed gratitude for the love and memories shared by fans, friends, and family, adding, “Your prayers and kindness mean more than words can express.”
