Imagine waking up to the news of Dennis Rodman marrying himself! This would have been all over social media in today’s era. The pictures would have gone viral, just like Rodman himself. But back in 1996, when he actually donned a wedding gown to promote his book, many were shocked. It was unconventional, and as Rodman explained, very eccentric, something he felt ruined his status amongst his team, the Chicago Bulls.
Reflecting on that book-signing-turned-wedding day, the 5X NBA Champion declared that if he had Twitter (Now X) and social media back then, he would have been the biggest athlete in the world. “I told a lot of my friends said, dude, if I had this, the media, Twitter, or stuff like that, I’d be, boy, I’d probably be the first big athlete,” Rodman said on Got Sole Podcast.
And we don’t doubt it. The book signing event was for Rodman’s memoir, Bad as I Wanna Be. When asked about his self-marriage, Rodman explained how it was not at all dangerous. He noted how people never expected an athlete to do something so unconventional and revolutionary.

“I was doing it back then, boy, whoo. But it was like, really not dangerous stuff. It was more like, eccentric stuff, eccentric, you know, more like, wow, he actually did that, because people wasn’t expecting athletes to do all this!” Rodman quipped.
As iconic as the moment was, Rodman revealed that it wasn’t something he had planned for a long time. He recounted that he randomly came up with the idea, and those around him encouraged it. The final confirmation came from none other than Aerosmith lead singer, Steven Tyler. “That’s how it all started right there… I think that really blew my whole career up.“
Only Rodman could have pulled off his own wedding. This eccentric nature was, however, the reason that he thought he wouldn’t be included in The Last Dance docuseries.
Dennis Rodman didn’t think he would be invited to The Last Dance

To his surprise, The Worm was part of the Netflix show, The Last Dance. Rodman had initially been called out by David Stern for his tattoos during his playing days. The former NBA commissioner even warned Rodman against getting more tattoos, thinking he was too eccentric for the show. “I was shocked that the Chicago Bulls even asked me to come. I think I was a little too eccentric for them,” Rodman said.
And eccentric he was. Director Jason Hehir had a difficult time preparing Rodman for his interview. Rodman was two hours late and stated that he would sit for only 10 minutes. He only agreed to sit down after the director met his demands for a tuna sub and chamomile tea. The interview then lasted three hours.

While Scottie Pippen has been vocal about his opinions on The Last Dance, Rodman has remained relatively quiet. However, he did acknowledge how admirable Scottie was. Whether it’s his rebounds or his ever-changing hair color, the Chicago Bulls legend has always managed to be the center of attention, no matter where he goes.
