Right now, if we look back at Dwyane Wade‘s career, there is a lot to appreciate. Right from his collegiate career to his NBA days, Wade left a mark on the sport. He started his career at the Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Representing the Golden Eagles, the Flash won numerous individual awards while taking his team to the Final Four of March Madness for the first time in decades. All these achievements yet it seems Wade had other plans for his collegiate career.

During the latest episode of the podcast The Way with Dwyane Wade, he talks about why he wanted to go to Iowa. With guest host Candace Parker, Wade discussed the unusual reason for being drawn toward the Hawkeyes.

He said, “So Iowa is actually one of the schools I wanted to go to. And it’s not for no reason that would make sense. I like the colors. I don’t have many pictures of my childhood. But I have one when, I have Iowa basketball shorts. Yeah, black and gold, and I love black and gold.” The colors black and gold made him attracted to Iowa, but what’s the backstory?

The 3x NBA champion revealed “My high school was black and gold. I love gold. So like Michigan was blue and gold. So those are two schools when I was young, I wanted to go to Michigan or I wanted to go to Iowa.” Further explaining that he had already thought of his career in Purdue and being a kid he only found black and gold attractive. “But Iowa I was like, okay, I could do I could do Iowa like I could do Purdue. Like in these schools, I don’t know. It was the colors when we were kids.”

Dwyane Wade might have had a soft spot for Iowa when he was a kid but now he is truly a Golden Eagle. He took to Twitter to share his excitement for his alma mater going to the Sweet 16 for the first time in over a decade.

Dwyane Wade is the biggest cheerleader for Marquette

Marquette won 81-77 over Colorado on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Celebrating the victory, the 3x NBA champion wrote, “Let’sssssssss Goooooo‼️ Another one!” Marquette will be hoping to reach the Elite 8 round for only the third time since the turn of the century. And only once did they reach the Final Four in those three instances. Guess who was leading them at the time?

After not playing at all during his Freshman year due to eligibility rules, Wade’s averages in his Sophomore year were 17.8 PPG and 3.4 APG. He led the Conference USA in steals per game with 2.5, helping Marquette finish with a 26–7 record, their best since the 1993–94 season. Next year during the 2002-03 season, Wade again led the school in scoring with 21.6 PPG. The Golden Eagles finished with a 27–6 record. Wade was Conference USA Player of the Year in 2003 and led the team to their first Final Four appearance since they won the Championship in 1977.

Marquette retired his jersey #3 because of his accomplishments. His love for the color Gold ended up with 3x NBA Championships. Talk about a fairy tale.
