The NBA has been nothing short of cinema lately. With dynasties falling, scoring 60 points becoming a common affair, trade rumors, and All-Star selections, the drama lovers are well-fed by the league. Another feather was added to the cap when Doc Rivers was announced as the coach for the Eastern Conference 2024 All-Star game.

The surprising element is that Rivers had been with the Milwaukee Bucks for a grand total of three games when he was given this responsibility. However, he did try to make a gesture towards the ex-Bucks coach.

Rivers said that he would give the All-Star ring and the coaching share to Adrian Griffin. However, his declaration didn’t sit well with NBA veteran Eddie Johnson as he started listing out some of the major issues that the Bucks have in their camp as of now. Quoting Rivers’ update, Johnson wrote, “Ok, nice gesture, neat feel good reaction, but then when you look at the optics of all this. It makes me sick.” The NBA veteran gave props to Griffin for keeping a 30-13 tally despite facing several hardships but didn’t take his eyes off the other issues with the Bucks.

He wrote, “A Griffin gets his first job and despite the struggle goes 30-13. D Lillard now goes public stating he has been depressed all year and Giannis is the GM and impatient!”. Many people are wondering what Johnson talked about, does Rivers deserve the major honor and all the perks that come with it? Maybe it’s too late to delve into that.

Griffin was the coach of the Bucks since the beginning of the season and in the 44 games that he coached, the Bucks were 31-13. This is the reason why Rivers was able to land this job. The Bucks are currently 2nd in the East, only behind the Boston Celtics. The Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was not eligible because he coached the All-Star team last season. After taking the Bucks head coach position, Rivers talked about Griffin.

He said, “Adrian and I are good friends. I talked to Adrian the last three days. I talked to him the night of the firing, I talked to him, we talk a lot. Listen, I wanted him to do well. I look at him as a guy that – he’s a lifer – and for 15 years, he was trying to get a job and then he gets a job and it doesn’t work out for him.”
