Can Magic Johnson's investment elevate the Washington Spirit to new heights in women's soccer?

Just a year ago, Magic Johnson officially became a billionaire, and now he has an even more impressive portfolio of investments, especially in sports teams. After investments in the WNBA, NFL, MLB, and MLS, now he’s making waves in women’s soccer, joining the investment group of the Trinity Rodman-led Washington Spirit. With NWSL fans buzzing over what’s next, Johnson’s first move as a billionaire investor has everyone talking.

Johnson took to Instagram on Friday to share a video of himself at the Ida B. Wells Middle School in D.C. The Washington Spirit, in partnership with DC Scores, hosted a community event, bringing Johnson into the fold not just as a co-owner but as a presence in the community. Spirit co-owner Michele Kang, who has been in charge of the team’s ownership group, accompanied him.

In his post, Johnson expressed his excitementI had an amazing time today with my incredible partner and Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang at Ida B. Wells Middle School here in DC! The Washington Spirit in partnership with DC Scores held a community event where the kids gave us an on-field demonstration and I encouraged them on the importance of education and following their dreams!”

He also thanked those who made the day possible, including DCPS Chancellor Dr. Lewis Ferebee and DC Scores Executive Director Katrina Owens.

Certainly, fellow Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman must be thrilled to see Magic supporting a team featuring his daughter, Trinity Rodman. Trinity has been tearing up the field this season, ranking as the second-highest goal scorer with six goals in 17 games. Johnson, who praised Trinity when she won gold with the USA soccer team at the Olympics, hasn’t had his first public interaction with her as a co-owner yet, but fans are eagerly anticipating it.

Have an interesting take?

Magic Johnson is a winner through and through, and he’s already setting expectations sky-high. With 14 championships under his belt, he’s eyeing his 15th with the Spirit, who currently sits comfortably in second place, eyeing a deep playoff run.

Magic Johnson’s investments in sports

Magic Johnson is no rookie when it comes to investing in sports teams. His latest venture with the Washington Spirit marks his fifth major franchise investment, adding to an impressive lineup that already includes the NFL’s Washington Commanders, the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, MLS’s Los Angeles FC, and MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. Not to mention, he’s also in the E-Sports game with Team Liquid.

But is it just about the money? Absolutely not. Johnson has been clear about his passion for being part of the ownership game. “I love sports. I love to be in the ownership because it’s important that they see minorities in an ownership position,” Johnson shared alongside Michele Kang on CBS Mornings.

The 65-year-old’s ownership track record is nothing short of marvelous. He’s already tasted championship glory with the Los Angeles Sparks, who secured their third WNBA title in 2016, just three seasons after Johnson jumped on board.

The Dodgers took home the World Series in 2020, and LAFC celebrated its first-ever MLS Cup in 2022. Meanwhile, Team Liquid has racked up several championships, dominating in games like League of Legends and Dota 2. So we can expect the Washington Spirit to reign supreme in the NWSL soon.
