Magic Johnson has a massive love for his alma mater. Be it through social media posts or in person, the champ is always rooting for the team. From donations for the growth of the program to boosting the morale of the players, Johnson is present for the team. He was in attendance when the Spartans took over USC and UCLA. Just recently, he commended Tre Holloman for his spectacular game in leading the team. As the Spartans made yet another major achievement, Johnson is on cloud nine!

Despite a slow start causing tension among the fans, the Spartans rallied in the second half to secure a 91-84 win over Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. This marked the team’s first outright 2025 Big Ten win since 2018. With this, No. 7 MSU won’t have to share their title. It’s a proud moment for the Lakers legend too, and he quickly took to X to congratulate the team and the players.

“Congratulations to my Michigan State Spartans on their 91-84 victory over Iowa! With this win they are the regular season Big Ten Champions! Go Green, Go White! @MSU_Basketball,” Johnson wrote.

Iowa had an extraordinary game. The team started strong, and despite holding a 14-point lead early in the second half, MSU managed a 33-6 scoring run. Even after that, Iowa made massive efforts to maintain the gap. However, thanks to freshman guard Jase Richardson and Holloman, who made back-to-back three-pointers to reduce the difference and take the lead. With some help from Jaden Akins, MSU secured the win.

Five Spartans players achieved double figures in the matchup. Richardson had a game-high 22 points. He was followed by Akins and Jaxon Kohler, who each scored 15 points. While Jeremy Fears Jr. added 14, Holloman scored 11. Next up for Johnson’s alma mater is a showdown against state rival Michigan Wolverines. Before that, the team might like to celebrate the win! Johnson, who has been constantly praising the team in the last few weeks, must have known their potential!

The Spartans’ efforts to elevate the team have been commendable this year. And their biggest supporter is present to hype them up. Just after the team’s five wins in the Big Ten, Johnson made sure to mention it on his X along with several more messages to motivate the team.

He also had words of praise for Holloman for his buzzer-beating shot in MSU’s game against Maryland. “Tre Holloman hit a half court shot to seal the victory for my Spartans over Maryland on the road and I just started jumping up and screaming like a little kid. This is their third win in a row over a ranked opponent! @MSU_Basketball,” Johnson wrote on X. 

He has previously appreciated Akins and Fears for their contribution. After MSU’s battle against Badgers, the Los Angeles Lakers legend wrote, “MSU is playing their best basketball heading into the tournament. Defensive schemes and man-to-man rotations have been exceptional, and they have been thriving on creating transition offense/fast break opportunities from turnovers.” The 5X NBA champ is closely following the games and this might only motivate the players to do better as they gear up for the next matchup.
