“KD is one of my favorite players and people.” Magic Johnson’s message for Kevin Durant last year made it clear that the former Los Angeles Lakers star is a big-time fan of the Phoenix Suns Superstar. So it was only a matter of time before Johnson reacted to the milestone that Durant recently achieved. As most fans would know, the 14x All-Star has almost all the accolades an NBA star could desire. Championships? Done. MVP Title? Done. Finals MVP? Done. And this is just scratching the surface as his list of accolades is too long. But now he’s done something exceptional.
Durant joined the elite club for the fastest to 30,000 career points. He’s now the third-fastest player in NBA history to have a crack at the major milestone. Only two legends—Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan—got there faster. And he did it despite missing an entire season recovering from an Achilles injury, a setback that could’ve slowed down any player for good. But KD isn’t just any player.
Magic Johnson knew exactly what this moment meant and made sure to give Durant the recognition he deserved. “Congratulations future Hall of Famer and All-Time NBA great Kevin Durant on becoming only the 8th player in NBA History to score over 30,000 points! He’s the 3rd fastest to do so, only behind Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan,” Johnson wrote on X.

Kevin Durant sealed the milestone with a 34-point performance against the Memphis Grizzlies, pushing his career total to 30,008 points. That puts him at No. 8 on the all-time scoring list, and let’s be honest—if injuries hadn’t taken away a few prime seasons, he’d probably be knocking on the door of the top three right now.
In fact, had he not missed the entire 2019-20 season and been limited in other years, there’s a real chance he’d be within striking distance of LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. But even with the setbacks, KD now stands alongside Abdul-Jabbar as the third-fastest player ever to reach 30K, hitting the mark in just 1,101 games.
The best part? He’s not done yet.

How high can Kevin Durant climb on the leaderboard?
The 14x All-Star missed his fair share of games over the years, but does that mean he can’t climb past legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant on the all-time scoring list? Not necessarily. It all comes down to how long he keeps going.
At 6-foot-11 with a silky-smooth jump shot, Durant has made scoring look effortless from anywhere on the floor. Whether it’s inside, mid-range, or from deep. Even at 36, he’s still putting up 27.1 points per game, which is a testament to his skill and consistency.

The real concern? His health. Ever since that devastating Achilles injury in the 2019 NBA Finals, injuries have kept him off the court more than he’d like. But this season? He’s been unstoppable, playing all 39 out of 39 games. If he keeps up both his present form and health, he could pass Jordan’s 32,292 points as early as next season.
But what about the top three? That’s where things get tricky. Karl Malone sits at 36,928, meaning Durant would still need about 4,637 more. It’s a long road, but knowing KD, you can’t count him out just yet. But let’s keep those assumptions for the future, and appreciate what Durant has achieved in the present. Exactly what Magic Johnson is doing.
