Does Shaq's fashion sense deserve more credit, or is he right to stick to his own style?

Shaquille O’Neal has only two fashion modes. “My own style is about professional or homeboy.” The Lakers legend had his share of problems fitting into clothes because of his tall structure. He always wants to prove a point with his fashion, which is why he even wore suits that he couldn’t afford during his special draft night. Earlier this year, Shaq even revealed his fashion secret, and how his family doesn’t trust his style quotient. And now the stylist from his recent show spoke about how to solve those very issues.

You know Shaq can rock a suit like nobody, right?” said Renée Brown, responsible for O’Neal’s styling. “My favorite for him under the suits are always a white shirt. For some reason, it just really pops on it that would be my preference. Just so I don’t bore everybody to death and just all white let’s add some blue.” She was holding a gray suit that Shaquille O’Neal wore during one of the episodes, with a blue shirt underneath.

What if the color scheme doesn’t match with the 4x NBA Champion? “If he doesn’t like it, then we have a plethora of other options.” Brown wasn’t kidding, as the coat hanger had more than 20 options available for Shaquille O’Neal to try. In between, she also mentioned size 22 shoes and how the Big Aristotle rocks them every time. “We was just pairing it with you know these little tiny tiny baby black shoes. You know he kills it every time,” via the ABC YouTube channel.

The plenty of options to choose from and wear is now a luxury that 15x All-Star can afford. In order to give similar options to people, Shaquille O’Neal even launched an affordable, inclusive-sizing fashion line. He partnered with JCPenney for a collection of menswear focused on inclusive sizing and suits ‘Big & Tall Line’.

During the 1992 draft, Shaq “didn’t have $1,500 at the time.” Then, before his big draft day, the 3x Finals MVP went shopping but quickly realized he did not have enough to pay for the suits. But the guy behind the counter actually made a sweet gesture, which O’Neal still remembered. “The guy looked at me and said, ‘Shaq, you’re nice. You’re a gentleman. I know you’re going to do big things. Just pay me when you can,‘” via People.

Shaquille O’Neal got two suits that day, but never got to wear the one he liked. Mother, Lucille vetoed that decision and chose the other option, which was off aquatic ocean green suit instead. What’s interesting is that to date, Shaq doesn’t get the credit for his fashion statement in his household.

Does Shaq's fashion sense deserve more credit, or is he right to stick to his own style?

Have an interesting take?

I’m told by my family and my friends I don’t really know and understand fashion.” Not just family, O’Neal’s best friend Charles Barkley too continuously avoids lauding the Lakers legend’s efforts. But to win their hearts, the Hall of Famer won’t shop from any billion-dollar valued brands.

“I don’t go Prada and Louis Vuitton… I don’t really do that,” Shaquille O’Neal told People in the same interview. There is a strong reason why the Lakers legend gets dressed up and looks sharp. “My definition of fashion is, ‘How would you look if you’re trying to have a meeting with Jeff Bezos? How would you look if you are at a conference with President Barack Obama?'”.

Plus, with him being one of the executives of multiple brands, leaving a mark wearing a sharp suit will definitely help him close the deal. That is why even the stylist, Renée Brown, had to keep multiple options ready for Shaquille O’Neal.
