LeBron's support backfires—Is he losing his touch in influencing the NBA narrative?

Gilbert Arenas — an avid LeBron James fan or just someone who has been reduced to a paid PR agent? The allegations on social media platforms have been quite hard against Gil for quite some time now. While some of these are fan accounts, some have simply been accounts for sports updates. But the observations and accusations against former Wizards star have been similar. As per these observations, Arenas tries way too hard to defend the King, praise him. And at times, even downplay the talent from the 80s.

The most recent one to share a take on this has been NBA Strife. “Is Klutch Sports paying Gilbert Arenas to try to change the NEGATIVE narratives surrounding LeBron James?” they captioned a clip from Arenas’ podcast. The clip featured Rashad McCants supporting the opinion that NBA superstars who left their team to win the NBA championship deserve a competitive knock on their legacy. Meanwhile, Arenas stood against this perception, but did he try too hard during the defense?

“… Ron Harper averaged 20 and said, ‘Oh, man, I want to go play with Michael Jordan.’ Wins them championships. He did that, right? Dennis Rodman, ‘That is the new juggernaut team. Us bad boys is going, let me come over there,'” he said on the podcast. However, the former Minnesota Timberwolves star corrected Arenas that Rodman did not go over to the Bulls, but the franchise itself wanted him.

The opinion could not stand more true as Rodman had already won 2 NBA championships anyway before landing with the Bulls. And there is no denying that he became a crucial aspect of the team’s second 3-peat. But Arenas seemed too adamant to support his narrative. He argued it’s weird that people criticize a player who moves but not the ones who are calling that player. Gil even brought in more names, like Karl Malone and Gary Payton. Arguing everyone did it, but not many got called out. All this defense by Arenas, but to serve what purpose?

It’s no secret that the biggest name to face the most severe criticism for forming a super team of sorts to win the championship has been LeBron James. His move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to join players like Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in order to win his first NBA championship wasn’t well received. What brought even more heat on James was him glorifying the move with a television special — The Decision. It’s a different argument if the 4x NBA champ deserved this. But Arenas defending the move doesn’t seem to sit right.

Not the first instance for Gilbert Arenas

Have an interesting take?

Notably, this was not the first instance that Arenas defended the King on his move to Miami Heat. In a separate episode of his podcast, ex-Warriors argued no one talks about why Bron left the Cavs. It was only a matter of time that one of the social media pages called out Arenas for siding once again with the 4x NBA champ.

“Gilbert Arenas is a top 2 paid Klutch Sportz client,” IQ Hoops captioned their post featuring Arenas’ podcast clip. Similarly, a YouTube channel by the name of Franchise Sports TV termed the 3x All Star to be a “Klutch Sports minion”. For those who are unaware, Klutch Sports is a sports agency founded by LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul.

There is no denying that in recent times, Arenas has leaned quite a bit in favor of James in most of his arguments. And one could also easily observe a pattern of Gil throwing shade at players from the 80s and 90s. This includes his recent backing of Anthony Edwards’ opinion of the players in the Michael Jordan era.
