Can Scotty Pippen Jr. carve his own legacy, or will he always be compared to his legendary father?

Regardless of all the obstructions the Pippen family has had to face, they have remained tightly knit. Whether it’s attending each other’s graduation ceremonies or showing love through IG Stories, the family continuously supports one another. Recently, Scotty Pippen Jr. secured a permanent position with the Memphis Grizzlies, and the family is over the moon. Scotty’s mother, Larsa Pippen, took to her IG handle to express her pride in the 23-year-old.

The Real Housewives of Miami actress has been resharing every post that mentioned Scotty’s deal on her IG Story. “Congrats, my love @pippenjr,” she captioned one of her IG stories. Scotty’s father, NBA legend Scottie Pippen, has yet to comment publicly. He’s likely been busy with his latest endeavor which is tokenizing the basketball from the 1991-92 Championship and preparing a new documentary about the Chicago Bulls of that era.

However, it’s likely that the Chicago Bulls legend has privately sent his wishes to his son. The news was first shared by NBA insider Shams Charania. “Pippen had an impressive finish to 2023-24 and a strong NBA Summer League and preseason. Now locks in a guaranteed new deal,” the post read.

And soon after, Scotty confirmed it himself, posting on Instagram with the caption “blessings,” while many left congratulatory messages in the comments.

Larsa and Scottie haven’t been seen together since their divorce in 2021, but they have consistently worked hard co-parenting their children. That has been one thing that has kept them bound. “I feel like we just talk about our kids,” Larsa had admitted, further iterating that her kids and family have been her primary focus of late. So Scotty’s new chapter received no less attention from the 50-year-old than one could have expected.

What makes the 6’1″ guard’s game so interesting is his relentless determination. After going undrafted in 2022, he signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA Summer League. His skills didn’t go unnoticed. Memphis Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman said, “How is Scotty Pippen Jr. not the MVP of the summer league? I’m still confused by that.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can Scotty Pippen Jr. carve his own legacy, or will he always be compared to his legendary father?

Have an interesting take?

His big opportunity came early in 2023. In January, he signed a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. Averaging 12.9 points and 4.7 assists per game in 21 appearances last season, Pippen is now considered one of Memphis’s top players.

Since then, he has consistently shown his best, further solidifying his presence with a dominant showing in the Las Vegas Summer League, where he was named to the All-Summer League First Team, while narrowly missing out on the MVP title after averaging 10.3 points and 4.5 assists in 20.5 minutes across four games. Scotty still has a long way to go and the Pippens are here for it.
