The late great Kobe Bryant‘s whole life was a lesson. A lesson in perseverance, excellence, overcoming obstacles, and achieving great things, regardless of where you start. So many athletes still live by his principles. The best thing about his teachings is that it’s not restricted to an athlete’s lifestyle.

Whatever field of work one is involved in, there’s something that can be taken away from the way Kobe lived. Similarly, two golf enthusiasts and podcasters turned to Kobe when they were torn between choices.

Mike Strait and Eli Strait are two golf enthusiasts who have started a podcast called Chasing Scratch. During a recent conversation with the Golfers Journal, Mike and Eli talked about reaching a point where they considered giving up on their dreams. The duo was caught up in determining what should be the ideal outcome for the work that they had been putting in. At such a crucial time, one of Kobe’s many life lessons entered their lives.

Their mental coach Dr. Jason Novetsky brought in a Kobe tape where the Black Mamba talked about dealing with the choice between outcome and growth. In Kobe’s interview with Jemele Hill for BET, he was asked about some of the setbacks in his career, like the playoffs game against the Utah Jazz where the Mamba shot 4 airballs. Kobe said that he doesn’t worry about the outcome as much as he cares about the process. For him, growth was always a priority over everything else, including outcomes.

Kobe told Hill what was going on inside his head after he missed those crucial shots in a tied game. He said, “What I was thinking was, damn, I should have made them. Then I said, well, why didn’t I make them? So I was able to think tactically as opposed to thinking emotionally.” In the interview, Kobe was also asked about which kind of athlete he is, one who loves to win or the one who hates to lose.

The Mamba said, “Neither.” The 5x NBA champion said that he has found a middle ground between those two extremes. He said, “I play to figure things out. I play to learn something”, so that way the outcome doesn’t matter as much as the process, and the growth does. When this piece of advice reached the Chasing Scratch duo, they said, “If Kobe Bryant placed growth over outcomes, who are we to be above that?” and that is how Mike and Eli were able to get their project to take off.
