Kobe Bryant’s statue unveiling ceremony was an emotional night for everybody, not just the basketball community. But what should have been a celebration has turned into a controversy. Recently there were errors found on the statue, which has rightfully irked many people’s sentiment. One of them is Stephen A. Smith. ESPN recently uploaded a video on their YouTube channel where Smith is criticizing the spelling mistakes, and deep-diving into the relationship of other LA Lakers staff with Kobe.

On First Take, he said “and you you know how much Jeanie Buss (President of Lakers) loves loved Kobe and how much Rob Pelinka (General Manager/ VP of basketball operations) people don’t bring up his name enough. He was Kobe’s agent and and for years.”

He further adds apart from being Kobe Bryant’s agent, Pelinka probably got the Lakers job only because of his connection with Black Mamba“And Rob Pelinka would not be running the Lakers organization if it were not for the wondrous relationship he had with Kobe Bryant. Who believed in that man so much more than anybody else on the planet did.”

Glaring Mistakes on Kobe Bryant’s Statue

The statue includes a box score. Which consists of spelling mistakes of two Toronto Raptors players. Von Wafer’s first name is written ‘VOM’, and Jose Calderon, last name is written ‘Calderson’. Another infuriating thing is that somebody decided to write the wrong spelling of the word decision.

Stephen A. Smith during the same episode continued how important is Kobe Bryant to the culture and the people. Yet such kind of mistakes should have never taken place. ” And to know what Kobe means to them and to know what the statue of Kobe means to so many people and to have those errors. You don’t allow, you don’t let something like that happen.

Smith further explained how he understands nothing can be perfect, mistakes are part of life. But when something is planned over four years, things should have been double-checked. “Nobody’s Flawless everyone’s imperfect mistakes happen but my God come on now that’s not something that was impromptu spontaneous off the cuff. You planned this for a lengthy period of time at least make sure the names are spelled accurately.”

Though Lakers have put out a statement, stating “We have been aware of this for a few weeks and are already working to get it corrected soon.” Smith shared his thoughts and said, “It will be corrected and it needs to.
